I mailed out a HUGE batch of PBS books on Jan 21st. 4 book orders, 4 swap books, and a whole bunch of BOBs. Plus two CDs and a DVD for the other sites as well (all of which went first class). All had DC on them except the CDs and DVD. Not a single ONE of them has been scanned or delivered yet. Considering it's now been 10 days, I'm getting a little concerned. It seems unlikely that not a single item in the batch would have hit a scanner by now, especially since most of my packages get scanned by the PA distribution center 3-4 days after I mail them. Items I just shipped 2 days ago are already getting scanned so I think my concern is justified.

Considering it was all media mail, is there any way I can check up on what has happened to my packages?

They're not actually required to scan them until delivery (and, IMHO, about 30% of the time they don't even do it then). Sometimes they'll pass through a big automated sorting facility that'll scan them accidentally, and then they hit the system sooner, but that's luck of the draw.

Well one of the first class items was received yesterday - TEN days after I mailed it. That's a ridiculous turn-around for a first class package. Hopefully the other stuff will start trickling in now.

Bren, did you mail these items from that strange little PO in your town?

Bren, I once had a first class package (a single book) take the full time to get to its recipient.  It arrived one day before it was due to be lost.  Who knows?

Yes Connie they were all mailed out by my local post office - which has more trouble than I have ever had with one of the big city POs I have ever been in. The fact that they no longer have any of their own employees but are running on temps from our nearest distribution center isn't helping at all. AND to top it all off the village is trying to force them to move because they want to knock down the current building (which the USPS only rents) to put in more parking for the village's downtown area. I've been told we may lose them altogether, they may end up merging with the other TINY post office the next zip code over.

Well as of today all the small packages (3 first class, 2 swap books, 4 books mailed for credit) have safely arrived at their destinations. Not a single one of the larger packages (BOBs) have arrived or even been scanned. I am getting nervous because we are talking like 30 books here and I'm not sure how I will make this up to the recipients if they don't show up soon. The only thing my postmaster could tell me is that they've been holding media mail longer recently due to an increase in outgoing mail volume, and that the bigger packages may have gone out several days later than the smaller ones. He also said they've been getting a lot of mail returned lately that was mailed out from that office - come to find out the scale had to be recalibrated b/c it was under-weighing things that weren't getting caught until a few stops down the line. Hopefully no one will receive one of these packages postage due - I would feel terrible!

Give it time.  I had a book that took nearly a MONTH just to get scanned...and then a few more days to get delivered.  It did "go lost" but eventually found its way.  I hope it works out!

Well one of the books just came back to me for insufficient postage - I intend to just take it back and ask them to resend it without charge since they do KNOW that their scale wasn't working properly.
