I'm still kind of new to pbs and am curious about the condition of books requirement.... I have requested quite a few books and have received them in all different conditions. If all of the pages were there and it had the cover and the book could be read, I have received them taped back together, library books with stickers inside and out, some that looked so read that the spine was very creased. I figured it was ok. After all we trade books to read and if they are books you wish to collect you should have listed condition requirements... yes? Any way some of those books I have requested and received I have re-listed and have had members get very upset over the book condition. The book had the cover, all pages, not water damaged, no heavy writing in it.... just looked very read. Which to me was a good thing.... meant a good book to read ... because it looked like every one else in the known world read it. It must be great ... Right ?? ...Wrong??

So I guess my question is how do you rate a book ? Is there a 1 through 10 scoring somewhere? Is there a way you can send photos of the book or books you want to send before you send them.

PBS does not use a rating system. All books must meet PBS postability conditions. If you have not read them, please take the time to go up to the Help Center and read the section about sending books to see what can be swapped here. Books condition requirements are much higher here than on sites that allow descriptions or ratings. If you send a book that does not meet the requirements it will be marked Received With a Problem and you will need to return the credit.

Some of the items you have listed: the book you received taped together was not acceptable. Ex-library book markings are ok. Spine creases are ok. Absolutely NO water damage or staining is allowed.  No writing on any text pages at all unless you receive prior approval. The spine must be intact with all the pages firmly attached - just having the pages and cover there is not enough. Any book that is excessively worn should not be posted.  Just because you get it from the system doesn't always mean you can pass it along. If you get an unpostable book, mark it RWaP and ask for your credit back. If the book is tired and worn or becomes damaged while you have it, its PBS will end with you.

Miss two little letters.....

Absolutely water damage or staining is allowed   --- I think Melanie meant to put  a NO in there before water.

You need to familiarize yourself with the posting guidelines.  Just because you receive a bad book and don't complain about it doesn't mean someone else will. And it sounds to me like you don't know what is and isn't allowed to be posted on PBS.  PBS works on a first in first out basis and so conditions notes don't work with PBS.

Also sometimes you (and all PBSers) have to be the last one to pay a credit for a book.  Everybook eventually gets to it's last person as a postable book and sometimes that person is you, or me or that other guy. The one to say "OK I am the last who will pay a credit for this book and it's time to remove it from PBS circulation"

I did go to help and read all about book conditions and all of my personal books do meet the requirements of pbs..... I guess about 20% of those I have received should have been rejected.... Oh well ... I still enjoyed reading them. I have had only 2  books I relisted refused of the multitudes I have already mailed out. Those 2 members were very happy with my solutions so I have had no complaints. So I guess as far as me receiveing a book that does not meet club requirements, is that I can choose to keep a sub-standard book forever or do a WRAP.

Carla - you should mark a nonpostable book as a RWAP regardless of whether you want to keep it or not (you never have to send the book back). This helps the system know when a member is sending them and they can correct a member if it becomes a habit. If people just quietly accept unpostable books then the member will think it is ok to send them when it is not.  You don't have to ask for a credit back when you do that, but it is your right.  Its great that you resolved the two RWAPs that you had, and that fact will reflect well on your account history.

You can always offer unpostable books in the Book Bazaar either free with an order from your shelf or for a credit. There you can explain the damage so the requester knows what they are dealing with. Often Wish List books are readily snatched up for a credit.

Absolutely NO water damage or staining is allowed - should read: Absolutely NO liquid damage or staining is allowed

Per PBS.  Otherwise coffee, tea, & pet urine could be considered postable.
