I thoroughly enjoyed this book as it was well written. Despite my knowledge of the Civil War, this was one battle I had never really read about. The author did an excellent job. His description of the second assault on the fort, and the casualties taken by both sides, reminded me of the bloodshed which occurred on Tarawa in World War II.

The only area I can fault the author for were the poor maps. Only two were used, and the one depicting the assault on the fort could have been much better. In fact, one battery which played an important role could not be found on the map. The map showing the assault was placed much earlier in the book than the action it depicted. Yet the author had two sections with numerous period photographs. While the assaults were often described down to the individuals making them, the map only showed two broad arrows depicting the direction of attack.
