I bought this book for the wrong reason, I thought it was another one of those stories about Holmes, written by another author---not Doyle---based on a "newly discovered" manuscript by Dr. Watson. I really enjoy all the Holmes' stories, no matter who writes them.

Once I realized this wasn't the case, I kept reading to see where the story would lead. About half-way through the book I couldn't figure out where it was heading and thought about stopping. I'm glad I didn't because I ended up really enjoying the story.

In this tale, the protagonist is a member of a dysfunctional family who have very little to do with each other. When his uncle dies and leaves him a cottage on an island, the protagonist takes the opportunity to change his mundane life and see what happens. A short story he finds buried in a box, written by his uncle, leads him to a new beginning. I found it quietly uplifting.
