For days I was number one in line on my wish list for a book, I just check my wish list this morning and now I'm number 3 I'm confused how this happens?

There are a couple of possibilities.  Someone posted a WL book to someone in front of you, moving you up to #1.  But then the request timed out without being accepted or marked mailed and now that person is #1 again moving you back a notch.  In the meantime someone else could have received that WL book and marked it RWP putting them back in the #1 spot or a copy that was mailed last month has gone lost-putting the requestor back in the #1 spot.  Or someone ahead of you could have had their account on hold and taken it off vacation.

Something similar has happened to me. So annoying and confusing.   I have been 2 of 4 on a wishlisted book for a few months now. Today I saw that 2 wishes had been granted in the last week and I'm still 2 of 4!

Probably accounts on hold with wishlisted books auto-requested?

Or people posting WL books directly to other members which is allowed.

I think autorequested WL books of people on hold still show up in the count because they are still in the line for that book.

A lot of the active forum users make a lot of friends here and they post WL books directly to each other.  One reason is that they know the book will accepted and not time out on several users first.  And many times it's because they have more than 1 WL book they mail to a buddy and save on postage.

How do you post a wishlisted book to a certain member without it going in the WL queue?

If you open up another members wish list, you can click on the "post this book" button while you are still in their wish list and it automatically offers your book to that member.  However, if you open up a book link in their wish list and then post the book, it goes to the FIFO list.

Jessica, to post directly to someone's WL, go to her wishlist.

Click on "post this book."  The usual window for posting a window shows up, except there is a light green box saying "You are posting to member X"

Do not use the usual "post books" link, or the book description page  -- these will post the book to FIFO WL queue.

hope this helps.

Also you can't be on hold when you do this. If your account is on hold it'll brign up the "you are posting this book x member" but then it goes on your shelf on hold and when you unhold it puts it to FIFO.

This happens to me all all the time & it's so annoying.  I've actually starting keeping a spreadsheet that I update every week & let me tell you this happens way too often.  In fact, I was going through my list just this morning & found I was pushed further down the list in over half of my wishlists.  Plus, I'm not talking about one place, in most cases I was pushed down two places & even three on a couple.  In one case I was first on the list for a book that hasn't even come out yet; been first for months.  I come on today & find that I'm second.  Wasn't too pleased about that one.  It's almost like people cutting in front of you at the amusement park.

Moving back in line after a few weeks I can understand, but months?  Is there a limit to how long accounts can be on vacation hold?  I'd be tres annoyed to be holding a spot for months then get moved back several.

I don't think there is a time limit on how long the account can be on hold. It's also possible that if the person did come off vacation hold temporarily for just a few hours and then went back on, you would miss that movement up and down. I don't keep that close of a watch on my WL--I do print it out every month or two and note places in line just so I can see the trend as to whether I'm moving up the line at all or if maybe I should look for some books at the library or UBS or something instead of waiting. (Although I just recently got a book that I'd been wishing for for about 3 1/2 years!! So sometimes patience does pay off!)

Considering how often we see here on the forums people talking about RWAPping, books going lost, requests timing out, etc. it shouldn't be too much of a surprise to go up and down on the wishlist when those things happen to people who were ahead of you in line.

I had my account on hold for 6months one time. I had a house to sell and one to buy, and a cross country military move to make.  I would unhold occassionally to post a few WL books so I wouldn't have to move them. But there was a 3 month period where we were computerless and basically homeless while we drove cross country, took a  vacation, lived with the inlaws and lived in hotels while waiting to close on this house.

I hardly pay any attention to my place in the WL book line. If someone behind me gets it before it's no big deal to me. I just don't have the time or patience to track my line movement. I'd rather spend the time reading.

There are over 200,000 PBS members so It's easy to see how your place in line can move up in down a few places in just one day.  Especially during summer vacation season and Holiday season when many people go on hold because they don't want books to come while they're out of town but come off hold long enought to post WL books.

Thanks for the info!   There have been times when I'm number one on a wishlist for 4 to 6 months waiting for a book (I watch AR and credits for my short waitlisted books).  After that length of time I would be upset to move not just one but several places back in a very short time.

Thanks for all the replies, I can understand going up or down over long periods of time but this is a fast moving book, last week I was like number 15 or so, then I checked and I was number one then I went on to check what was taking me so long to get the book offered to me and I was back to number 3 like 1-2 days after I was number 1 I'm up to number 2 today, I guess I underdstand it, it's just frustrating KWIM

I wish there was some kind of points system or feedback type system for how fast people respond to requests or mail books because I always respond the same day a book is posted to me(except once when I thought I had responded but actually had not) and I always mail my books with in 2-3 days but usually the next day but I don't always have time to get on the forums here to make friends

i agree it's frustrating. there's one book on my list that keeps saying it's been listed in the past week. then i'll move down 1-2 spots. but then a week later, i'll go back up 2 spots and then it says it was last listed a month ago. and then the cycle happens again. i'm not sure what's going on there but it's very annoying b/c for the past 2 months i keep thinking the list is going down but nope, i keep staying in cycle, move down 2 spots, go back up 2 spots, book says last listed in the week, book says last listed last month.
