The first Thomas Chaloner historical mystery series set in early Restoration London. I've enjoyed the books I've read thus far in Gregory's medieval series featuring physician Matthew Bartholomew so was looking forward to trying this new series of hers right from the beginning. I can't say I enjoyed this book as much as I do the other series, but that's possibly partly due to the time periodâI much prefer medieval times. But part of it was also that the hero is a professional spy and there was much time and space devoted to him lurking in doorways, following various people, disguising himself, or trying to evade others who were following him. At 500 pages, I really felt some of that fluff could have been hacked out and it still would have retained the essence of the story without being soâI don't know, tiresome, I guess. I will probably read more as the series progresses, but I'll be content to wait til the paperback comes out.
