Hi!

I have been having a problem with not receiving books I have requested, that have been accepted and marked mailed.  This has happened twice with the same book with the same sender, and seems to be happening again with a different book.  The first book, I wrote back to the guy several times and he said he had mailed it and he is sort of a collector so he had several copies of the book.  He said that he would mail it again outside PBS since I never got it, but have never received it.  I sort of believe him, but people do lie.  This time it's been about a month already and I have not received the book.  Maybe just a delay for Christmas.  This has happened a few other times years ago.

My question is that when I get messages from the powers that be in the club they say that this could somehow land on me as some kind of problem and that I could lose my membership over this.  I don't understand what I could have done to deserve that, or what I could do to prevent it.  As far as I know, I don't have an evil mailman, and I receive my commercial packages so I don't have an indication that anything has been stolen.  Does anyone know what the story is with this?

You are probably just receiving the automated messages that are just intended to remind people to mark books received incase they've forgotten.  Unless it's an excessive number of books going lost to you then I wouldn't worry about it.

I think I've had around 5 go lost enroute to me, a couple of which were audiobooks for 2 credits.  1 said it was delivered but I never saw it and I checked with my neighbors. They didn'g make me pay the credits just becasue it was scanned as delivered.

Are you receiving other PBS books from other senders successfully, or do all your books from PBS go lost? If you are marking other books received on time, then you aren't going to lose your membership just because you had bad transactions with one flaky person who posts the same book repeatedly and doesn't send it. (He might lose his account though.)

There is an automated system that will put your account on hold if several books in a row have gone lost. This system does not know if you didn't mark books received because you didn't get them or because you forgot or what, so don't take it personally if that happens. Just unhold your account and move on.

If you are not getting a lot of the books you request from PBS, and especially if multiple books have scan records that end around the same place, you do need to investigate this with your postmaster. You have to have a reliable mailing address in order to be a member here, because it's not fair to ask other people to keep spending money to send you books if they're not going to arrive.

Hopefully this is just a case of two bad senders coming close together and things will improve in the new year.

No, only a few have been lost.  I have gotten many many of them just fine.  Just two copies of the one title, and then another one recently, and I think, one or two a couple of years ago.  But the message from the club says that having books lost like that can become a problem for a member's club membership, and I don't understand why, unless it is found that they are lying about it.  I almost always send with delivery confirmation myself, and I think it's well worth it, but some people don't.  I always mark everything received within a day of when I get it.

As Cathy explained, if someone orders books but doesn't have a reliable address (perhaps their mail is stolen regularly by the 10-yr-old kid down the block, or they have a pack rat living in the back of the mail box that collects books) then they would rack up lots of lost books -- the members who sent them wouldn't get credit for them.  Even if the unreliability of the address is not their fault, they should not be ordering books until they get it straightened out.

It doesn't sound as if that's the case for you if other mail is arriving.  It's a generalized automated "lost book" email, not tailored to your particular situation.  You can skip over the parts that don't apply to you.

It is an automated message, in no way accusing you personally of anything. It is just worded that way to let people know that a pattern of lost books will be investigated so that no one does get the idea to just not mark books received to get their credits back. Most honest people can't fathom the crazy schemes people dream up to get free stuff. It sounds like there would be no pattern on your account and you would have nothing to worry about.

I am not sure what you are saying.  Did someone claim to mail you the same book twice?

I had that happen with two members here.  One gal claimed to mail the book in May 2012 and it went lost.  The same book was offered to me again by the same person in July 2012.  It also went lost.  So I took down the info, sent it to PBS and now her account is closed.

Another member did the same in July 2011, book went lost.  Same book, same person in October 2011 and it went lost again.  I think I sent them this info but her account is only on hold and has not been suspended/closed.

I keep a close eye on books that are lost which are sent to me as well as the books I send going lost.  It is important to me to keep my account in good standing so I do watch transactions.  I know that some members may have two copies of a book, like I do sometimes, but usually not two copies in HB and it not being a popular book where everyone gets it, like with Grisham or some very popular author.  That has been my experience and is just my opinion.  It is possible but not very likely.  IMHO.

As Melanie said, "It is an automated message, in no way accusing you personally of anything...."  Some members that are having an unusual number of lost books, discover their problem is either a problem at the regional sorting center or even the local branch.  For those members, PBS recommends reporting multiple lost books to USPS for investigation.

Ok.  Get it.  As far as the two book issue.  I had a wishlisted book that did not come.  I PM'd the guy and he sent it out again he said.  He happened to have several copies of the book since he's a collector.  I PM'd him again and he said that he had sent it.  I don't really know what happened, but I'm not going to report him because he still might send it.  I may also buy it from the overstock section because it's on there now anyway.  If the guy is telling the truth he sent it twice.  He said that he does have problems with his post office, and I think he's out in the mountains somewhere or something.  So, I'm happy to let that go, but I did not know what the dividing line of having problems with my account over that would be.  Thanks for the info!!

Got the book.  It's beautiful.  Just took an unusually long time to arrive.  I guess it was just the season.
