Is there a way to find out how many copies of a certain book is in the PBS system?

Yes.  Add the book to your Reminder List.  This will include how many copies are currently posted.

Of course, some may well end up being from abandoned accounts.

Yes. Add the book to your reminder list. Then the # of copies will show up on your reminder list.
There is no way to tell where your copy is in line within that number of copies.

Hope this helps!

Here is what I do. Add it to reminder list as others have said. I then attach a 'note' to the book showing how many copies were in the system when I posted my book.

For example, in the note, if it shows there are 110 copies are in the system, that is what I put in the note. If I check it a few months later and the book shows there are now 90 copies posted, I can assume that 20 books have been ordered. It probably isn't 100% accurate, but it gives you a basic idea where your book is in the line.
