I've entered an ISBN number for a paperback book, but it becomes listed as a Hardcover book.  The cover picture matches, but the the book type.  How do I handle this situation?

This happens sometimes. They may have reused the ISBN for a later version. You can't use that listing, so you'll have to post your book without an ISBN. If you click "post this book", near the bottom you'll see I have a different book than the ones shown above.

If you click that, you'll be able to enter all the info you need to post your copy.

You will have to enter it as a "Short ISBN" book.

After you have clicked on the "Post Book" tab there is a link in the bottom right hand corner "click here" click there and you will have to enter all of the information for the book.  When I have done this I generally open up a window that has a copy of the ISBN version up so that I can copy and paste the back cover description.

The reason that this is necessary is because with some books the hardback and paperback books have the same ISBN (depends upon the publisher).

The above are your most likely solutions Carol.  Although, there's a small chance the listing is in error.  If you're in the mood to do some research, check around online and see if both bindings were published under the same ISBN.  If so, you will need to post your book with a 'Short ISBN' ... if not, you can submit your information to the Data Correction team.

I'd also double check that it's not an ARC or uncorrected proof. They're often paperback versions with the same ISBN as the final hardcover copy and aren't allowed to be posted because they're not the final version.

Follow up question: I just received a book with the correct ISBN that's the wrong binding. Should I RWAP? On the one hand, they sent a book with the same # I requested. On the other hand, shouldn't they have noticed the discrepancy when they posted? I feel bad to RWAP it, because there's nothing otherwise wrong with it, but I'm really not a fan of hardback books, and I've had this wishlisted for quite awhile.

Marion - that is exactly what the received with a problem - wrong book option is for. If you are ok with the book, you don't have to ask for you credit back, but it should be marked as a problem so that the member knows they have posted the book wrong and should be more careful in the future.
