I just read online that Amazon bought PBS in 2016. Is this correct or fake news?

Because I've heard that TPTB don't necessarily visit these forums, I sent feedback to TPTB and hope they'll be able to answer the question. Pat

No, it's not correct. Amazon is a public company that has to disclose information about mergers and acquisitions to investors. You can easily find Amazon's 10-Q and 10-K filings at sec.gov as well as their annual reports to shareholders and you'll see that PaperBackSwap is never mentioned. There's also a wikipedia article if you don't want to wade through the official docs.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_mergers_and_acquisitions_by_Amazon.com

I would have to ask myself what benefit a conglomerate like AZ would have in purchasing a small and not terribly profitable proprietary book trading site?  For every book traded, AZ loses a potential new, used, or e-reader book purchase.  If I am interested in a book, I ALWAYS look to see if I can get it here first.  In fact, several years ago my DS made me a widget (applet? browser extension? add-on?-whatever the correct term is) we jokingly named  "PaperBackAzon."  When I am browsing books on AZ, if I see a book I'm interested in I just have to click on "PaperBackAzon" in my tool bar and it instantly opens a new window to the book page on PBS for the book I was looking at.  I can see immediately if it is available to order or WL.   If AZ were ever to buy PBS, I imagine they would shut it down pronto - there's no serious money in this site and, let's face it, AZ exists to be profitable, not to support a good cause such as recycling used books.

OK that makes sense. The PBS referred to Pulbic Broadcasting Services. Thanks for clearing my misread. Sorry

Here's the response I got from PBS.

Thanks for writing in. That's definitely not true into.

Looks like that member had confused PBS (Public Broadcasting System, the TV station) with PaperBackSwap. (Amazon did not buy the TV station either.)

Have a great day!
