Here's the situation:

I was granted a wishlist request (on auto request) on the 17th. The sender said they would mail it by the 23rd. It is now past the 2 day grace period to mark it mailed and it hasn't been; however, the sender printed the label a few hours ago and obviously mailed it because it is listed as scanned and en route under details. So does this mean they still get instant credit even though the transaction is about to time out? And since they never time out right at the time indicated, does this mean I might end up with another wish granted for the same book but be out two credits if the second sender accepts and prints the label before I can get online in the morning to cancel it?

Thanks for any answers! :)

I would quickly send a PM to the other member reminding them to mark it mailed before the system times it out.

If the system cancels the request and you get a second copy ordered by the system because the first did not mark it mailed, you are not obligated to give the first person the credit. You only have to give the credit to the book that arrives with an active order. This is only the case if you get a second copy, if you do not get second copy ordered here, you will need to go into your TA and mark it as received.

Yeah, but they used DC. Will the system go ahead and remove their instant credit once the transaction times out? That's what I'm worried about. Ending up with the same two books and being out two credits because of DC.

Well they couldn't have printed the label if it has timed out.  I didn't think the DC history showed on PBS  if it wasn't marked as mailed.

But yes if it times out then it'll go back on your WL. If you end up with 2 copies of the book then you don't have to give the 1st person a credit because they didn't mark it mailed.

If it still shows as pending: I would contact the sender and ask them to mark it mailed before it times out.

Personally if I saw the DC there and knew the book was on it's way-I would probably put my account on vacation to prevent another copy from coming to me but still preserving my place in line.  I would just autorequest any other books I was near the top of the list for incase they got posted.

If you don't do that then when the book is posted to you, you can either decline and lose your place in line or accept and then PM the sender and ask them to cancel.

You could set up a temporary RC just for that book if it gets posted say something like "XX book might be enroute to me but it wasn't marked as mailed.  please decline for RCS so I dont' lose my place in line incase the book doesn't show up" or something like that.

If it were me I would just go on vacation.

I don't think the instant credit is applied if the book isn't marked mailed even if it is scanned.

Ok, I'll just go on vacation then. That will work.

They printed the label 3 hours before the deadline to mark it mailed. It's now technically past the deadline, but since they don't time out at the exact hour that the deadline is up, it's not yet cancelled.

Edited to add: Thanks for the help! ;)

I don't think a Vacation Hold will help. If the book was on auto-request before, it will go back on your list as auto-request and Vacation Holds don't stop those.

It should time out around 3am, thats when most of the system actions take effect. Hopefully, the person comes in before then and marks it mailed.

Really? Darn. Well I'm on vacation hold just in case. And I sent the member a PM. Hopefully either way it gets resolved without my losing a credit, or really, the money to relist and ship a second book.

a few things-

chances are, since this is a wl book- you will have enough time to remove that book from auto before it is posted into the system again

just remove the auto request for that book- that should give you time for the sender to respond to your pm

send them a pm reminding them to mark it mailed

if they do not mark it mailed the system will cancel the order (and i think, even though they used dc, refund your credit) and you will be back in line

if this book is not heavily posted it might be pointless to go on vacation

i think putting your account on vacation might be overkill- what about the other wl books you might be offered while waiting- to be passed over b/c you are on vaca hold? (not worth it if it were me)

i would just remove that one book from auto request and see how it plays out

even if you are offered the book again soon- you can still work it out if it comes to that.

and remember- it the book arrives you are under NO obligation to give them a credit if they fail to mark it mailed before the system cancels it- but it would be a nice thing to do...

just remove the auto request for that book- that should give you time for the sender to respond to your pm ->this is good in theory, and would make a Vacation Hold work, the problem is that she cannot remove the auto-request until the current order is cancelled by the system. There is no way to change it right now because it isn't on her WL, its an active order.

i think putting your account on vacation might be overkill- what about the other wl books you might be offered while waiting- to be passed over b/c you are on vaca hold? (not worth it if it were me) -> as long as her other WL books are on auto-request, she wont miss any.

I've had two times where a WL order was cancelled and mailed before or I caught that it was a second copy of the book. It can happen, but hopefully since you are aware of it and watching it, you will catch it between postings. If the deadline does pass and the order is cancelled, it might be beneficial to keep the Vacation Hold on and just toggle the auto-request off of that book if you catch it between offers. That way, if the book goes lost or arrives as a RWAP,  you will retain your spot in the WL line without having to contact the site.

It's a Federal Holiday...How did they get the book scanned?

You won't be out two credits, even if they do get their DC credit.  Which I don't think they will until they mark it mailed.

The DC credit is 'gifted' to them by the site and then when you mark it recieved, your held credit clears that.  So, if it does go on to second member, your held credit is now held for them.  Which would mean the site is out the DC credit for the first member and that is why I'm pretty sure they need to mark it mailed before they will get the DC credit.

Hope that makes sense...I'm really tired.  Off to bed now...

Well, there are some 24-hour post offices that are open even on holidays. I know there is one at the airport here in Mpls. Also, even if the PO isn't open, mail still moves behind the scenes. I've often dropped books in a blue box on Saturday night and had a scan at our local distribution center on Sunday.

mugndoli: Vacation hold wasn't a problem since most of my WL books are no where near being granted right now. I had a recent spurt of activity and all the close ones were offered this week!

Thank you guys for you help and advice! I wasn't worried about it timing out until I saw they had used DC, and I wasn't sure how that might affect the situation. :)

They marked it mailed at 12 am so it's all good. They didn't respond to my PM, though, but I'm sure that's what got it marked mailed. Not sure what it up with this person. Maybe they just aren't a big communicater.

Well, now that all is good, I'm gonna highjack a bit.

Cheryl, 24 hours as in people are there to scan them for you?  Or just the lobby open so you can get to the APC?

And I know the PO stills moves even on days off/after hours.  My surprise comes from the fact that they printed at about 8 PM on the night of a holiday and within three hours it had been scanned.  Though if they dropped it at the main PO for their area, I can see a scan possibly happening.

I think some of the major cities have 24 hr post offices.

They printed at 8 pm and by 9 pm the info showed up in details. It was scanned at La Verne, CA. I don't know if that's a major station or not, but I received a book from the same place about a month ago.

I have a small sub station of the PO near my house and it's not a 24 hour but a seven day operation.  I can take my packages there between 9 and 3 on Sunday and they get scanned when I hand them to the clerk.  Nicer service than at the bigger PO's too.
