If you have made a deal with someone on the BB are the credits usually given before the bks arrive or after?

Usually it's an "Order X and PM me your freebies" type of things...so, if it's 2 for 1, you'd order 1 from the member's shelf and PM t hem the 2nd one you want (as well as posting it in the thread in the Bazaar).  However, some people do want to be buddied any credits and PM'd your address, this is acceptable . So, either way, credits are either buddied ahead or held by the system until the books arrive.

I guess it depends on the deal and what the traders want to do.

What I usually do is offer a deal but have the requestor order a book from my shelf. For example, I had a 7book Scifi-deal, where I asked that who ever wanted the deal order 3 of the seven books off my shelf. Then I'd box up all 7 of the books and send them.

Then when the books arrived they'd mark the 3 received just like normal.

Or if they're not postable, the receiver can put the books on their WL and the sender can post directly to the requestors WL. That way it's not posted to the FIFO WL, and the credit is still kept in escrow until the book arrives.

Personally, I would always use the site to keep the credit(s) in escrow even for BB deals.

Buying credits on the other hand is different. I wouldn't give over credits until I had payment.

I ordered something and just assumed I would give the credits after the bks arrived. The sender pm'd me and said she was waiting for me to give her the credits before she put the bks in the mail.I suppose it is no big deal but i would have rather given the credits after the bks got here.

You say you ordered it, is that asked for in a PM, or ordered it through the system? If you ordered it through the system DO NOT give the sender credits now, they'd get them again when you marked the book received.

I always express extreme caution when doing deals through the Book Bazaar by buddying credits prior to the books being sent.  If you don't have them sent through the system you have absolutely no recourse if the books are damaged or don't ever show up. There have been scammers in the past and there most likely will be scammers again. The site cannot protect you if you don't use the methods they have set up for ordering books. This sender should be willing to follow PBS procedure. If I haven't had previous contact with a member I would seriously hesitate to buddy credits before I recieved the book.

This is what I was going to say.  I always make sure there are pending PBS transactions equal to the # of credits I'm spending. I don't even do it when I'm the sender.  It's better to have everything done through PBS channels.

I let people do whatever they are comfortable with. Usually they order x number of posted books and I ship those and the agreed upon others. Some people have just buddied the credits and said what they wanted - if they are comfortable with that, it's okay with me.  One said it kept her order page "neater." Whatever works for both parties is okay with me.  I will say that most of those who have buddied the credits have had transactions with me one or more times previously, but a few haven't. I've never had a problem either way.

I will just have to wait and see how it all plays out. I did not order anything from her shelf so there is not any record of the transaction.  I really did not give it much thought until the person asked me to buddy them the credits before they mailed the bks .i have gotten bks from the BB before without ordering from someones shelf but I have always given the credits after the item arrived.

I send half the credits when they tell me the books are mailed and the other half when I receive the books.

Hm, interesting that you get people to agree to that.  I'd say half up front and half when you receive the books would seem fair to both parties, but whatever you both find agreeable.

It really is all about what the two people are comfortable with, as Jodi mentions.  The only way I've done BB deals is through the system and I wouldn't do it any differently unless it was someone I felt really comfortable with.  I will to say, I would never send books to someone I did not know without getting the credits up front.  It is a risk for someone either way, though.

I transfer credits when DC indicates the books are enroute.

Then what do you do when the sender doesn't use DC?

I've never used PBS DC once, and don't see any need ot use it. Lot's of people don't use it.

And if you're going to ask them to use DC, why not make it even easier and just order the books off their shelf that meets the credits needed and then be protected if the books go lost?

Once you 'gift' the credits, the sender's DC isn't going to get you your credits back on lost books if you don't have them ordered through the system.

Most BB deals work on the basis of you ordering X amount from someone's shelf, and they send you those + whatever freebies you request.  Some people will occasionally buddy credits for the books they want, but that is most often done in unusual circumstances, like I've done it before when I have a complete collection of an author's books, and they aren't posted to my PBS shelf yet, or if I have some really old books with no ISBN#'s (again not posted yet), then I may work out something with someone who wants all of them, and instead of trying to post them so they can order them, they would buddy me X amount of credits & I send them the books.  I will post at least one book to my shelf though, and have them order that one.  That way I can print a PBS label, and also so that I have a transaction on record, even though what's on record isn't the whole of the transaction & the rest of the agreement is in PMs.  I will usually only do this with people that I "know" from the PBS forums however.  It seems odd to me that someone would post an offer of this type in the BB, and I'd be uncomfortable with agreeing to it if it were me.  If it's someone who you've dealt with in the past, is on your buddy list, etc. it's probably fine.  It may even be fine now, but I would still think twice about doing that from a posted BB deal.
