An extraordinary analysis of the first day's battle, following almost every individual regiment that participated. The reader is overwhelmed as one regiment after another, on both sides, takes huge losses in the fighting.
Although the first day's battle was a Confederate victory, they paid for it dearly, as the Confederates took much higher losses than the Federals. And then some of these units were to also participate in Pickett's Charge on the blood third day.
Hassler does an excellent job defending his belief that the actions of the first day laid the groundwork for the ultimate Union victory at Gettysburg.
