Crushing Crystal - Jane Stuart and Winky Author:Evan Marshall When murder strikes too close to home, and pretty young girls vanish from the privileged streets of Shady Hills, literary agent Jane Stuart finds herself in the midst of a real-life page-turner...with a deadly surprise ending... — Jane couldn't say no when her nanny's sister needed a place to stay, but she's certainly glad to see her houseguest g... more »o. In just two short weeks as assistant director of the Shady Hills Public Library, Crystal Ryerson has proven herself a meddler par excellence. Relying on gossip and a powerful superiority complex, she has branded her Realtor's daughter an unfit mother, and formally accused a local school librarian of stealing computers. Popular, she is not.
Still, it's shocking when the next meeting of Jane's library reading group crashes to a halt as thousands of pounds of books and shelves come toppling down on poor Crystal. Especially when Jane's boyfriend, Detective Stanley Greenberg, makes a grim discovery: The bolts on the bookcase had been deliberately removed. By someone who had been at the meeting.
Crystal's Realtor, Myrtle Lovesey, and the recently fired school librarian, Dick Stanton, are prime suspects. Both were at the library that night. But things seem murkier to Jane, especially after the body of a beautiful teenager who worked at the library is found in the woods behind the railroad tracks, and two other girls go missing.
Jane knows the strange events are all part of the same puzzle?and she can't resist searching for the missing pieces. Somehow, despite the ever-present distractions of trying to keep Winky's claws out of the couch and her diva clients' claws out of each other, she manages to stay on the murderer's trail. But it just so happens that a trail can go both ways, and this one may well lead the killer right to Jane's doorstep...« less
I enjoy the Jane Stuart series. Crushing Crystal was another good one. The plot moved along well and the mystery was engaging.
In short this sixth novel in the series follows the same formula as the earlier novels in the series. The most obnoxious, meddlesome, vile character loved by a couple and hated by many is killed in an ironic way. The local police still seem to be amazingly inept. They're unable to do what Jane does while she manages her literary agency and deals with many authors.
The ongoing backdrop of the agency and her client list continues and serves to prove occasional amusement and distraction from the main storyline of this cozy as it has throughout the series. For those so inclined the formula continues and works well.
Currently 0/5 Stars.
