I don't post very often, but am an avid reader of the forums.  There are many posts concerning requesting from a favorite bookshelf and skipping the FIFO system.  Does anyone have an idea about how many books are actually traded using FIFO as opposed to requesting directly from someone's bookshelf?  Just curious.

I am not aware of any such knowledge to the members. We can see how many books are requested in a day, but that is all we can see. Using the Pulse of PBS, under the Community tab, you can see some various statistics, but I'm not even sure if PBS keeps that kind of record. Hmmm... Yeah, the probably could see it if they wanted to. You can see a lot with databases and their numbers.

I think the majority are traded through FIFO.  The members who frequest the message boards are a smaller part of the community.  Those are usually the ones who skip going through FIFO and even then not all the time.  I post a lot to my buddy's WL and have them posted directly to me. But I also post a lot to FIFO. If I happend to see a WL book I'm ready to post on the WL of someone I see here often, then I post it to them.

I think too, Mary, that it seems like it is done more than it really is, because we SEE people talking about doing it. But, when you take the few hundred members from the forums compared to the 35,000+ total membership, it's probably not a real large portion that don't use the FIFO.

That's what I was trying to say.  The number of people who actively post are small in comparison to the number of PBS members who trade regularly but never post.  I don't know anyone personally on PBS.  The only reason I have buddies that I might post directly to on occassion is because I'm on the forums. Even then, most of the time I post to FIFO because even with DSL it takes more time than I want to spend to look  up everyone's WL and see if they have the book I'm ready to post.  I usually only take the time if I have 2 or 3 WL books that I'm ready to post and I'm hoping to find someone with more than one.
