If you have a current generation Kindle, informally known as the K3, check out this link for software updates. It includes the plan to start putting page numbers in the ebooks.

I don't have a K3 and have no personal information on this. This is FYI.

Barbara, If you want the update with the page numbers, etc, you'll have to download and install the update.  It's pretty easy to do.  You just download the file, connect your Kindle to the pc, drag the update over, disconnect, reboot or use the update function in the menu, and wait.

The instructions are towards the bottom of the page Margaret linked to.

Or, if this is too much hassle, wait a few weeks/month and your kindle will do an update on its own via wi fi/3g.

This firmware is new today and this is an "early preview."  Amazon tends to release new firmware on its website for a month or so before they send it out to the Kindles for automatic download.  It's kind of a public beta testing period.

You have 3.0.2, a variation on 3.0.  This update is 3.1.

So, nope, you don't have it yet.

Thanks for the information.  Yes, I want page numbers.  Trying to find a location is annoying to say the least.

Before you Up Date best check out the complaints on the Amazon Forum!  At 1st everyone was excited....Now there are Nothing but Threads of complaints!

Melanti...ok thanks but page numbers dont mean a thing to  me LOL  & I hate the rest of the added junk!  Why would I want my Kindle full of Other Peoples Reviews!  Some give Long ones & Tell the whole story!  & Kindle only has 3 gig of space.....sadmakes no sence!

Reviews won't be on there.  At the end of the book they'll give you a link to rate the book or to post that you finished it to Twitter.  It also has lists of "people who bought this also bought ..." and "More books by this author."

For the annotations (notes ppl type in while reading books, not full reviews.) - it won't be everyone's annotations.  It's just the annotations of the people  you follow on Amazon.  For most people, that won't be any annotations at all.  And you can turn this off, just like you can the public highlights.

I'm not particularly enthusiastic about this update myself.  I really don't care too much about page numbers. BUT I know lots of people do -- especially people who are trying to use a book for a class or for a book club.  But even then, I'd assume that page numbers are going to be slight estimates. I might be wrong though.

I'm not seeing huge numbers of complaints on Amazon.  I see a couple of people that had their downloads stall, and a few books that have no page numbers (not all do at this point), but nothing major.  I installed it, and haven't had a single problem.  But I've not noticed any real benefit to having it either.  Just wait for the official release if you're worried.

I am very underwhelmed by this new update. The page numbers only work on books that have that feature added to them. After installing the update I synced with Amazon, but I have yet to find a book that shows page numbers. Having to hit the menu button to see the page/location seems like a step backwards to me. Also, that will be a problem should the Kindle freeze and reboot. As it was, you could quickly note what location you were at before it rebooted, losing your place in the book in the process. Now, if it freezes you can't access the menu to see where you're at. It shows the percentage read on the main screen, but you can't "go to" a percentage. Searching for where you left off in an ebook is a PITA.  I sent them feedback about this issue.

I've read that it greatly improved reading of newspapers and magazines, but I don't read either on my Kindle. Some have said the browser works better too, but  I don't use it because I'd rather use my laptop for the internet. There's a "before you go" rating feature at the end of the books now but I haven't gotten that far yet.

Also, be aware that if you have the jailbreak and hacks installed, you will not be able to uninstall them after installing the 3.1 update. What problems this might cause down the road remain to be seen.

I downloaded the update yesterday. Have had no problems with it. The reason you see complaints on the Amazon board is because people haven't read the documentation about how the page numbers work. And people just like to complain. The people who are happy, aren't going to go to the effort to post about being happy.
