A short biography of the military career of William Cushing who engaged in numerous cutting-out and small boat raids against the Confederacy. Cushing, who finished the war as the youngest lieutenant commander in the U.S. Navy had some personality problems that constantly got him in trouble with his superiors.
Tragically, his exertions for the Union resulted in some physical impairments that led to his death when he was only 32.
I was surprised to learn that William Cushing was the brother of Alonzo Cushing, the U.S. artilleryman who stood by his guns at the 'Grove of Trees' at Gettysburg, despite numerous terrible wounds and became a hero to the Union, as did William.
