Helpful Score: 2
This book comfortably moves along in chapters of its major characters' descriptions rather than the usual chronological sequence of events found in most books. This allows the reader a full understanding of each character and his/her motives instead of bits and pieces here and there. The last 1/3 of the book was a complete surprise.

Hate, lust and considerable intrigue propel Bradford's latest (after Everything to Gain), a romantic mystery. Sebastian Locke, the last great philanthropist, has the world at his fingertips?power, money and a beautiful fiancee. Suddenly, mysteriously, he commits suicide?or does he? The answer is unveiled through a series of first-person narratives by members of his dysfunctional family. Vivien, his third wife, who seduced, married and divorced Sebastian but remained his confidante, will stop at nothing to learn the truth behind his death. But the philanthropist's son, Jack, hated his father with a passion that rendered the younger man impotent; glad to be out from under his father's shadow, he couldn't care less about the truth. Meanwhile, Luciana, the fragile daughter with a will of iron that matches her father's, is determined to gain control of Sebastian's assets and to start a new Locke dynasty of her own. Bradford's writing style is dialogue-heavy and laid-back, sometimes passionless, but the clever and unexpected plot twists, capped by the revelation of Sebastian's shattering secret, will keep the author's many fans entranced.

I got this book through another book trade, but this isn't quite the type of book I read. I hope someone here would like to give it a try! :)

Back Cover: "Charismatic millionaire Sebastian Locke, the powerful patriarch of an esteemed American family, is a man renowned for his charm and intelligence. Committed to relieving the suffering of those in genuine need, he gives away millions every year to the poor, the sick and the innocent victims of natural disassters and wars. Whe he is found dead under mysterious circumstances at his country estate, the police are baffles. Who would have wanted to kill the world's most beloved philanthropist.

Vivienne Trent, a journalist, had been fascinated by Locke as a child, married him when she was a young woman, then later divorced him, but had always stayed close to him. Aware that there had been another side of this enigmatic man, she sets out to find the truth about his death--and life.

Following a twisted trail of secrets that winds from Connecticut to Provence, to Paris, London, and Africa, Vivienne uncovers startling revelations that will turn her life around--as once again master storyteller Barbara Taylor Bradford sweeps readers into the dazzling, turbulent life of a fascinating family--their love, lust, passion, ambition, jealousy, and pain."

Personally I cannot say enough about Barbara Taylor Bradford. Ever since I first read "A Woman of Substance" years ago, she hooked me in -- hook, line and sinker. I love historical novels and her books read like them. This is a great read and most entertaining. Made me look forward to bedtime where I have a little time to read every day.
