I went to the PO today to mail a book and a DVD. I had already printed out the label with DC from PBS. Normally I use the Automated machine and I have recieved the credit by the time I get back home. Today, the machine was out of order and I had to go to the clerk. I saw him scan the DC bar code (one of them wouldn't scan so he punched it in by hand). Now it's been at least 6 hours and I haven't recieved the credits and it doesn't say that they've been scanned when I call up the details of each transaction. Normally I wouldn't worry about it, but I do have a WL offer for a DVD and I'm waiting on the credit so I can respond to it before the time is up.

Does anyone have any idea why it's not showing up as scanned when I saw him do it? Has this happened to anyone else?

on friday, i took PBS DC packages to the post office and paid the postage at a clerk, and she scanned the package.  usps.com didn't have that scan listed until midnight ET, and PBS didn't get that information from the post office computers for another few hours.  you should have your credit by morning.

when you used the automated machine, do you know when/how your package was scanned?  the only time i used the APC in the lobby, i dropped my books in the regular blue box after adding the stamp and my packages weren't scanned at my PO.  one was scanned at delivery and the other should be when it gets delivered.

Nope, no idea. I just used the machine, dropped it in the box, and the credit was received within an hour tops. It's happened every time I've printed the DC on the computer and then taken it to the automated machine for the actual postage. Originally I thought that was pretty weird because I know a lot of members say it takes a while.  But I got used to it and so when it didn't happen today, I started getting curious.

ETA: So the credit for the book just came through, although I'm still waiting on the one for the DVD. So I guess everything is working correctly, it's just taking longer today than usual.

Gina sez:

In my experience, hand-scanned DC items (when I personally pay for postage at the post office) seem to take several hours to "come through" and register as scanned on PBS, even when I see them do it.  I've had them take as long as overnight to do so, but that's uncommon (for me, anyway).

The Help Center says:

"Even though you may have watched the PO clerk scan your barcodes, that doesn't mean that USPS transmitted the data to PBS right then.

  • The data has to go to their central computer first, and then to PBS. The delay involved is variable; our system has no choice but to wait to hear from theirs."

Cheers,
