I added the only DNF book, so far, for this year at GoodReads but it also adds the book in my "read" shelf; if I didn't finish the book it shouldn't be added to that shelf. Any way of eliminating 'read', or is it the default?

Is there a way around having a book added that way? It's misleading if I didn't finish it. Not that it's the end of the world, or a major cosmic problem..................

I don't think there is away around it, unless you change it back to read.

Same thing here.  I look at it as, I TRIED to read it, and since I wouldn't want to again, I wouldn't want it marked as unread.

It's a pain. You can tag or note it, though.

Thanks, everyone. I'll try tag/note, Willa, to see if that works for me. I didn't know that could be done.

If you make the DNF shelf an exclusive shelf, does it add to your read totals?  I thought I saw somewhere where it didn't.

DNF's DO count towards your read totals.

ETA: noticed this on the 2012 challenge page:

In order for a book to appear toward your goal, you must set the date read.

And because they do count in the end, I just won't add them. I'm at LibraryThing but when I started there 4 years ago I set up a reading list and a book-collection list, didn't bother setting up anything else.

You can tag books there, which I do like a maniac, but never did a DNF one. I wanted one at GR because so many of my PBS people are at GoodReads and wanted a DNF shelf - but overall it doesn't matter as there aren't a lot of books I consider DNFs. I start some that I drop almost right away, but when there's significent time or number of pages invested in a book and I stop that one I consider DNF.

Oh, I misread and thought you were talking about DNFS *here*. At GoodReads, I made an exclusive DNF shelf. They're not added to my challenge stats because they don't have a "date finished."

As Willa explained, the way to do it is to the create an exclusive shelf which you can do by going to: http://www.goodreads.com/shelf/edit and tick the 'exclusive' box by the DNF shelf. Once you do that, the books that you put in your DNF shelf won't show up either as 'read' or 'to read'.

I have several exclusive shelves, one for DNFs (which I called 'life is too short), another for wishlist books, another from books I can get from the library and another for books I'm not sure about. That way my TBR only has books I'm have on hand while my 'read' shelf only has books I've read.
