i'm getting a Kindle for Christmas, yay!  but really, this topic could be for any ereader.

i'm interested in making a list of places i can shop for non-DRM ebooks, and also what kind of books they might have available and/or focus on.  or if anyone knows of a comparison shopping site for ebooks i'm

thanks for your suggestions!

so far i've looked at these, but i'm happy to update the list if people have other suggestions:

  1. Fictionwise (must get the MultiFormat books, not the Secure eBooks which do have DRM)
  2. Smashwords [Indie Authors and Publishers]
  3. ARE www.allromanceebooks.com (they do have some secure books, so check before ordering) [romance]
  4. omnilit.com [same people & rules as ARE, wider selection of books]
  5. Webscription   [lots of sf&f, and also see the totally free subset - Baen Free Library ]
  6. Rainbow Ebooks  [gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered fiction (not sure what formats they sell - they have no info i could find)]
  7. manybooks.net  [free public domain books]
  8. girlebooks.com  [books by woman authors, some for sale, some free]
  9. Christianbook.com  [*some* are DRM free (looks like about 1/3), you must check the Format.  also, ePub only so you may need to convert.]
  10. http://1placeforromance.com/  [there's even a 'dollar romance' section!]
  11. Dreamspinner  ["Dreamspinner Press is an independent publisher of gay romantic fiction in a variety of sub-genres"]
  12. Carina Press [digital-first imprint from Harlequin]
  13. ??

http://www.webscription.net/  is DRM free.  It carries science fiction and fantasy published by Baen, Night Shade, Subterranean Press, and E-Books publishers.

There's also Rainbow Ebooks, which caters to gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered fiction. They're also having a 30% off sale, but that's probably until the end of tonight. (Sunday)

Personally, one of my favorite series is there, the "Psycop" series by Jordan Price.

Reviews

And the single "Zero at the Bone", by Jane Seville.

Reviews

Those are also offered in tradeback form, and some reviews are on PBS are in the links.

thanks for the suggestions so far!

i've also started looking at the other thread, but i'm having to go try to figure out which sites use DRM and which don't.

the sites which also sell devices do seem to all be DRM - amazon, B&N, Borders, and Kobo.  also, eharlequin.com uses DRM.

inkmesh.com consolidates prices from many sites.  they mention formats, but not sure that they specify if DRM free.

Other sources of info:  kindleboards lists lots of this type of info.   mobileread also does and is not kindle specific.  Lots of anti DRM people on mobileread, so probably the best source for that info.  just search the forums.

I know with Allromanceebooks, it depends on which format you download in if they're secure or not.

I accidentally downloaded two books in the wrong format and found I couldn't convert them with Calibre to the format I wanted because they were DRMed.  I emailed back and forth a couple of times with them and they were kind enough to let me re-download them in a different format once I explained I couldn't convert them with Calibre.  Once I downloaded them in PDF form, I could convert them.

This isn't a book store, but points out original novels that are usually on author's web sites. Most, if not all, of the ones I've see/downloaded have been DRM free. (Can't swear for sure, so make sure and check first before downloading!)

Here is a good article on DRM by the Calibre folks:

They give the following links to DRM free stores:

Just ran across another one, based in Canada. BeWrite Books. Looks like original works, DRM free in various formats.
