I received a book that had the wrapper taped directly to the cover - with COPIOUS amounts of PACKING tape of all things! The cover image that was under the tape came off when I opened it - it was pretty much unavoidable. Seriously, the only way I could NOT have damaged the book would have been for me to not UNWRAP the book at all!

Does this count as damaged by sender? The book is now unpostable - the image on the front cover is almost completely gone.

I would think so, since it clearly says not to tape the mailer to the book itself.  I would mark it RWP, send a polite message to the sender telling them that their copious use of packing tape directly onto the book cover has rendered it unpostable and leaves you out a credit.  Request they refund your credit.

ETA: If you suspect this is a new member you can look up in the help files and send them the verbaitum instructions on not taping the mailer to the cover.

Yes. If they taped to the book and it became damaged when you opened it, it is considered RWAP.

Per the Help Center:

"Damaged by Sender

  • This means the book appears to have been unacceptable for swapping at PBS before it was put in the mail
  • This includes books packaged using tape applied to the book if the book is damaged and rendered unrepostable by opening the package."

I'm with the others.. it clearly states that you aren't supposed to tape directly to the book!

I agree with everyone on this one.  The PBS rules are clear....taping directly on the cover causing damage when opening warrants marking the book RWAP and requesting your credit back!
