I laughed, I cried, got mad, held my breath to in anticipation, literlly couldn't put it down. Took me two days to read and I loved it! This book had everything it takes to make a repeat readable book on myself. If it can make me do all those things and think about it for hours on end afterward it is an excellent book and the writer knows how to keep a reader interested. A++++ author!

You really get to know Zarek, one of the most hard hearted Dark Hunters. Having endured a lifetime as a tormented Roman slave and 900 years as an exiled Dark Hunter, Zarek is not about to trust anyone. Then he meets Astrid, a goddess who has been sent to Earth to judge him. Zarek is taken in by the beautiful Astrid after he gets hurt in a battle with some Squires. He has no idea of Astrid's true purpose in his life as his heart starts to thaw through her ministrations. These characters were so different from each other - one a wild, not very attractive man; the woman a quite refined, compassionate beauty. As Zarek's background is revealed I was able to feel more sympathetic towards him rather than pitying and wishing he'd go away. Astrid is truly a wonderful character. The plot is filled with action and several surprises. Also has it's share of erotic longings fulfilled between the 2 characters. Couldn't put book down to see what would happen and was satisfied at the ending. An enjoyable, fun book!

All the Dark Hunters are tortured souls, but Zarek is the most tortured of all. This was my favorite Dark Hunter novel. It is the love story between Zarek, and Astrid, who was sent to judge him. She has never found anyone innocent until now.

I really enjoy the Dark Hunter series; even though you're pretty sure you know what's going to happen, the stories are still satisfying.
Here's one of the baddest of the bad put in a nearly impossible situation which he doesn't realize is a test. The scenery is interesting (cold!)and the characters are fun, especially the hero and heroine who don't see eye to eye. Love the "pet" wolf, demon child and cowboy Dark Hunter involved, too.

for romance fluff, this series is well thought out and researched.interesting take on the Greek and Roman Gods and even some Norse mythology thrown in there. Each novel focuses on a different couple, with their struggles to find love through difficult circumstances.Different enough twists to keep them interesting.not a bad way to spend some reading time.

Wow! A great book. I was drawn to Zarek in the last Dark Hunter book where he played a role in Talon & Sunshine's story. I am very glad that Zarek was able to have a story devoted to him. Zarek was a Roman slave when he was human - he went through hell - never knowing any kindness in his life. In his Dark Hunter life, everyone thinks he is insane and a screw up. Astrid is a justice nymph who is sent to judge him - if she judges him guilty, he dies. Her reputation is that she has never found a Dark Hunter innocent. The interactions between the two main characters is great - you learn more about the dark hunter mythology - as well as more about Acheron.

This has to be one of my top 5 books. I just LOVED it, especially how Astrid saved Zarek (tormented to the extreme). Zarek needed it- which is an understatement. This book is packed with emotion, you can't help but feel the need to save Zarek and wish for his HEA. Even more so when you catch a glimpse of the poet inside of him... WOW... SK knocks one out of the park with the "soul mate" factor, which plays a huge part on how I rate a book. This is such a wonderfully crafted story, I think it will be hard for ANY other Dark Hunter book to compare to this one, but we'll see. If you haven't started reading this series, put it in your TBR pile! They are packed with action, emotion, good vs. evil, alpha males and a whole other world to lose yourself in. Bravo Ms. Kenyon!

So great to have Zarek's story....really a great twist on the dark hunter novels- and you learn some background of Acheron

This book had me sobbing several times. I still can't talk about scenes without getting choked up. Nearly as heart-wrenching as Acheron! Next to Acheron this is my favorite book so far. I really have a soft spot for Zarek he's really funny in a mean way, lol.

I like the book. The book is about someone who has been beating everyday of his life, he has been charged with 2 crimes he did not do, and has a death sentence hanging over his head. He has been sent one of the 3 fates who will decide if he lives or dies. She shows him what it means to have someone show you kindness and touch you without raising a hand to strike you only to carress.
He will die to protect the innocent or the ones whom are to weak to fight back,(but unfortunately) he cannot be killed only lose and be a shadow that no one can see or notices. He has been that as a slave in Rome, and he has vowed he will never go to the land of shadows.

I feel reduntant lately... I don't know if it's me, or if each book really is better than the last one... and I'm only on #4. I like that each character, while the same in that they are Dark Hunters, Kenyon has made each one completely unique in their origins and back-stories. Definitely no redundancy there. Gotta go find #5 now!

Loved this book. Zarek hates everyone around him, but most all himself, the only thing that keeps him going is that fact that if he lives he's bound to piss someone off ~ including a goddess. Astrid is sent to judge him, without her sight, but she sees so much more than everyone else and soon wants to find away to save him. Zarek's story is heartwrenching and one totally worth reading.
Love Acheron even more and Simi is awsome, I am now a loyal fan of Simi. And I really wish that Ash would let Simi BBQ the red-headed goddess.

Hero: Zarek, Dark-Hunter. Heroine: Astrid, Justice Nymph. She's called to judge whether or not he should be "extinguished" by Artemis and Acheron. He's been banished to the wilds of Alaska for 900 years.
This was not my favorite of the series, but I still really liked it. Definitely a great series to read! I am looking forward to reading the rest.

This one had a lot of details about Dark Hunters, the Gods who control them etc. But despite the overwhelming details, still a great read and necesssary to understanding the whole series, IMHO.
This is my favorite of the Dark-Hunter series so far. As the series continues, you get more clues and information about Achelon and the history of the Dark-Hunters. Sherrilyn Kenyon fans will not want to miss this one. Definitely recommended!
okay
This is one of her older books [2003] that still can get you revved up. Has all the action, drama, love, mystery you ever want in a book.
Great book.
This was my favorite of the Dark Hunter series. I really liked Zarek's story and how the author handled it. I traded my copy when I was through reading but wish now that I had kept it.

I really enjoy all of Sherrilyn Kenyon's books. I have read several of the Dark-Hunter books and the League Series as well all of them are great! They aren't literary works of art certainly, but thats not why I read them. They are easy, breezy, HOT, romances served with a side of paranormal that makes my heart sing! I couldn't wait to get to know Zarek and the woman who could warm his frozen heart and I did! It was as fun to read as the others even though I know what's going to happen I enjoy seeing how it unfolds and there are always a surprise or two along the way! I enjoyed how Z was only tamed for Astrid and still a tough guy at heart. I'll still be reading more Dark-Hunters when I am between other book series!
Good, fun, easy reading. Each one of these seems to get a little better.
I have read a lot of Sherrilyn Kenyon's books but I have to say this is one of the better ones...There are a lot of twists and turns that i did not see coming and I finished it in one day...I look forward to reading more of this series and seeing what else she has to offer...if you like the Dark-Hunter books, then you have to ready this one...
I couldn't wait to read Zarek's story for the obvious reason of him being a major bad-boy! Was not disappointed. Loved this book and would recommend it to anyone who likes Kenyon's other reads. Steamy romance at it's best.
Good... but not my favorite!!!!
I loved this book from the front cover to the very last page!! Zarek is such a tortured man--you cant help but feel sorry for him. This is my favorite of the series so far.
Loved this book! Didn't think I would at first but once I figured out what was going on, I couldn't put it down!
If you like tortured heros, this is the book for you! I couldn't believe some of the things Zarek endured and there were a couple spots in the book that just broke my heart! This is the first book that I've read in this series (and by this author) and I'll definitely have to go back and read the first three books now. Great book, great characters. I definitely recommend!
i have always admired sherrilyn kenyon's books but she definitely overdid it this time. i absolutely couldnt put it down. courageous heroine, dreamy hero, suspenseful climaxes, an everlasting love story...who could ask for more!!
Yet another awesome book in this series. This one was a bit more interesting than the last couple since it it was more plot than steamy guys and sex, and it was a very good mix. There were strong plot lines, strong characters, and good humor. Excellent read.
love the series. couldn't read them fast enough! D:-)
Loved this one! Who could guess anyone could fall in love with Zarek. Definitely cried at the end. Read these in order, so you have more background on Zarek first. I loved that this one brought you even deeper into the Dark-Hunter world. This one is a bit darker than the others, but that makes it an even more rewarding story. I would highly recommend it!
I have only started reading this series of books, but I love them. This was never my genre of choice, but loving the Greek Mythology aspect of the series. By far, out of the first three, this one is my favorite! Soooo sexy and you really find yourself pleading for the hero of this story, Zarek. Definitely a great read.
Sherrilyn kenyon is an exceptional writer!
Zarek's story is just as captivating as all the others thus far! I am absolutely addicted to the Dark/Dream/Were Hunter series!
A definite read for anyone who enjoys paranormal romance books with alot of action in the mix!

Fantastic
Part of the Dark Hunter series....Sherrilyn Kenyon is a master
Ok, in all fairness we can't at all call this 'vamp fiction' (there's no biting) but it is a wonderful piece of paranormal romance.
Zarek, a Dark-Hunter, suffers from isolation and madness following countless injustices against him during his 900+ year life time. At last he is being put on trial, so to speak, with the likely outcome that he will be executed. Astrid is the nymph charged with judging him. Despite the fact that she is supposed to remain impartial, she finds herself feeling deep sympathy and caring for the man with the deeply tortured soul.
It is always challenging for an author to make their romantic lead so flawed and dangerous. Kenyon pulls it off with style and humor. Despite his moody, often cruel attitude you find yourself wanting the best for him.
It's deeply romantic. At times in a light, soft way. At times in a dramatic cerebral way. Bottom line, by the end of the book you have no doubt that the two characters are in love and that you want them to be together.
Side characters and world building add enhancement without overshadowing the lead couple. We see characters like the all-powerful Acheron, his demon companion Simi (comic relief in a big way), and Sasha the Were-Hunter. They're all intensely interesting and well developed.
I would recommend the Dark-Hunter series to any fan of paranormal romance. This book will be a particular treat for Dark-Hunter fans.

A favorite of mine in the Sherrilyn Kenyon series. Next to Acheron, Zared is next to my favorite of her characters.
I LOVED Zarek's book! He went through so much and it had me crying at times but he turns out to be very loveable!! Couldn't put it down!
OMG, how can anyone keep up with all these characters?? I really liked the book, it kept my interest, and made me want to rush home from work everyday to pick it back up, but I had to keep a notebook near by to keep everyone straight.
In this novel, Kenyon introduced and brought back:
Acheron, Artemis, Talon, Sunshine, Zarek, Astrid, Sasha, Sundown, Syra, Callyx, Dirce, Lachesis, Atropos, Clotho, Themis, Thanatos, Lera, Wink, Simi, Spawn, Valerius, Marcus, Marius and many more.
This is in addition to types of god(s):
Oneroi, Skoti, Dream-Hunters, Spathi, Moirae, Charonte, and Kallitechnis.
Then you have to keep track of realms:
Morpheus, Phantosis, Katoteros, Tartarus, Elysian Fields, etc. etc.
Don't get me wrong - I do enjoy her books, I just wish I can get ahold of her Companion Guide - and maybe that could help me out with remembering all this instead of having to keep a notebook.
The story itself was very upsetting, in how Zarek was treated as a human, and I was thankful for the happy ending. To me, it was very similar to another "Z" - BlackDagger Brotherhood's Zsadist. (hmmm, I wonder???)
4 stars from me

As always Sherrilyn has delivered in her Dark-Hunter series..I was impress in the different way Sherrilyn developed Zarek personality: he was the most damned man that could be forgiven by a woman with out seeing the physical man..good read
Dance With The Devil is Hands down my favorite in the Dark hunter series. I love Zarek. Even though this is not the first book in the series, I would suggest to anyone to read this one first just because it such a good story.

This book really moved me. It was a tear jerker.
This is a great book. It introduces some of the "support" staff for the Dark-Hunters and adds some knowledge about Acheron. However, be watchful if you are looking for the short story "A Dark-Hunter Christmas" which was originally published in the back of this book. (Kenyon's website lists it as the only location for this story at this time.) Some editions of the book have a preview of the next book (Kiss of the Night) instead. I found the short story in the back of the version with no lightning in the picture on the cover. But both versions have the same ISBN number, so there is no way to tell on PBS which one is listed. I hope that Kenyon will make the short story available somewhere else, because it is a great story with a touching Christmas scene with Simi.

Dark-Hunter novel. The story of Zarek. Banished to the frozen north for destroying the people he was supposed to protect, most of the Dark Hunters feel Zarek should be destroyed. After all, he claims he enjoys his insanity and is a self-professed blood drinker, though he is careful not to kill. Still, that breaks the rules. Enter Astrid, a nymph sent to Zarek to judge him and decide if he lives or dies. But while Astrid is learning the real Zarek, will he also learn the truth of what really happened to the village he is accused of destroying?
Zarek endured a lifetime as a Roman slave, and 900 years as an exiled Dark-Hunter. Now he wants the truth about what happened the night he was exiled. With nothing to lose and everything to gain because he has met Astrid, a point of light in his darkness.

Another great Kenyon novel. You can't go wrong with her books!
Loved this book
Zarek's Point of View:
Dark-Hunter: A soulless guardian who stands between mankind and those who would see mankind destroyed. Yeah, right. The only part of that Code of Honor I got was eternity and solitude.
Insanity: A condition many say I suffer from after being alone for so long. But I don't suffer from my insanity-I enjoy every minute of it.
Trust: I can't trust anyone...not even myself. The only thing I trust in is my ability to do the wrong thing in any situation and to hurt anyone who gets in my way.
Truth: I endured a lifetime as a Roman slave, and 900 years as an exiled Dark-Hunter. Now I'm tired of enduring. I want the truth about what happened the night I was exiled-I have nothing to lose and everything to gain.
Astrid (Greek, meaning star): An exceptional woman who can see straight to the truth. Brave and strong, she is a point of light in the darkness. She touches me and I tremble. She smiles and my cold heart shatters.
Zarek: They say even the most damned man can be forgiven. I never believed that until the night Astrid opened her door to me and made this feral beast want to be human again. Made me want to love and be loved. But how can an ex-slave whose soul is owned by a Greek goddess ever dream of touching, let alone holding, a fiery star?

Sherrilyn Kenyon is another of my favorites.
Not as good as some of the other DH stories. But it does have an interesting twist at the end with Zarek...
I love Sherrilyn Kenyon's Dark Hunter series! This book about naughty bad boy Zarek is one of her best.
I am loving this series. I finally have all of them and I've read the first 5 this week alone. 3 of them this weekend. Only 2 more to go.
Zarek, a feral Dark-Hunter, has been exiled in Alaska for 900 years. Now the gods send Astrid, sister of the Three Fates, to judge him. Zarek feels fear for the first time because he'll have to let Astrid into his heart and soul.
Best of the series so far.
