For fans of Sharon Shinn, I recommend this book. As usual, her world is well developed and she does a great job keeping track of all the details. Though this is mainly a romance novel, it does play with the classic good guys/bad guys battle.

For folks who have not read the first two books in the series, this is an easy book to read by itself. Some character interaction and subtext would be lost, but the book is so focused on Justin and Ellynor that it would be enjoyable as a stand alone. However, this book will probably get the new reader interested in reading the other books - and the ones yet to come - just to find out what happens.

As a next step in the series, I did find it a little disappointing (which rates it only 4 stars). I felt that the first two books did a pretty good job developing the characters and main story line. This book was too focused on Justin and Ellynor's romance without advancing the basic plot (civil war).

As for comments made about the story line being "too neat" - it's true, the story line does wrap up in a nice neat package at the end of the book. But the fact is that Ms. Shinn tends to present her stories this way. I have read all of her adult novels and this book fits into the same style. Frankly, that's one of the things I like about this author.

SPOILER Alert...

The development of other characters was hit and miss - and what happened to Princess Amalie? I love her character, and expect her to be rather important to the conclusion of the series, but she was non-existent in this book. The extremely important political interplay from the first two books was also missing from this novel - hence the comment about not advancing the central plot. I can understand why Ms. Shinn would need to insert this storyline now - she can't just marry Justin off without explanation, and the fact his bride is from the Lirrens is bound to be important - but this book mainly just enriches the background of the story without really evolving the plot.

This book is a thrilling third book in the Twelve Houses series. I do like the way Shinn portrays romance amid a fantasy world. The details of intrigue get really involved and stimulate my thought processes. I keep trying to figure out what will happen next. Really enjoyed this one, and I've started on the fourth and final book. Disappointed I'm nearing the end of the series.
