An absolutely haunting book by one of the most brilliant crime writers around, James Ellroy. Ellroy goes back in time and back to Los Angeles to ivestigate the murder of his own mother.

Such a sad tale. I sometimes wonder if this had been the mother of one of the police men--would it of been pushed aside so casualy? When you are done reading this tale of a boy left without a mother and of a man with so many questions. You come away with the question at the end of the book WHY? Looking back at the times, did a night on the town, if this is what it was, make her any less worthy of investing more time and energy into finding her killer. What made her unworthy, and still to this day, how has this man been able to fill the void in his heart to the level of contentment, or has he rally been able to? Very good read.
