My favorite thing about this book was the unusual setting - "Bleeding Kansas" during the civil war. Strong female characters, lots of trashy stuff. The male characters weren't as compelling.

1st book in the Slater brother's trilogy. After reading this, I look forward to reading the remaining 2 - Malachi's story: RIDES A HERO, and then Jaime's: APACHE SUMMER. I only hope they will be at least as good (don't know how they can get better than this one).

DARK STRANGER is a tight story that primarily takes place on the McCahy ranch on the Kansas/Missouri border during the last year or two of the Civil war. The characters are all marked by the effects of this war; secrets, hatred, killing, horror - drawing in secondary characters from the murderous bushwackers, jayhawkers and Quantrille's raiders.

This book is very good and the writing is outstanding. The wounds on the soul and mind of the lead (Cole Slater) is easy to emotionally understand, as well as the lead's (Kristin McCahy). Their journey to their HEA is colored by the effects of the Civil war time frame and I thought their thoughts and reactions normal and based on what one would actually think and feel given similar circumstances.
Straight through to the last page read for me. If all books in the trilogy are as good, it will be another Heather Graham series keeper for me.

Kristin McCahy's dream of freedom and a life of dignity and self-sufficiency had vanished. All she had left to fight for was her ranch--but she had to give up her independence to do it. She needed Cole Slater's help, but in return she offered the only thing she had--herself. No questions. No answers. Just a bargain. Cole hadn't meant to stay and he hadn't meant to get close to her. A woman was the last thing in the world he needed. He had commitments of his own, and he intended to see them through. But love had a way of changing the rules...

Good book. First in the Slater Brothers series. Followed by 'Rides a Hero' & 'Apache Summer'. All are worth reading.
