My favorite thing about this book was the unusual setting - "Bleeding Kansas" during the civil war. Strong female characters, lots of trashy stuff. The male characters weren't as compelling.
Very good historical Civil War romance novel.
Great story! Heather Graham is quite a writer!
Kristin McCahy was a fighter, struggling to keep the remnants of her family and ranch together as the Civil War raged around them.
His name was Cole Slater, and with him by her side, Kristin no longer had to fight her battles alone.
This is the first in a series by Heather Graham. If you have ever read any of her books then you know that you will not be disappointed. This is a great series and I was saving these books as I loved them but since you all love books it is time to share.Enjoy!
Light reading. Lots of lovemaking!
I really enjoyed this book from the beginning to the end. If you love historical romance with a little excitement too you will love this book.I enjoyed it so much I have ordered the next one to find out what happens next. I love the victorian and civil war days and this was a good book for me.
Kristin McCahy's dream of freedom and a life of dignity and self-sufficiency had vanished. All she had left to fight for was her ranch--but she had to give up her independence to do it. She needed Cole Slater's help, but in return she offered the only thing she had--herself. No questions. No answers. Just a bargain. Cole hadn't meant to stay and he hadn't meant to get close to her. A woman was the last thing in the world he needed. He had commitments of his own, and he intended to see them through. But love had a way of changing the rules...
Good book. First in the Slater Brothers series. Followed by 'Rides a Hero' & 'Apache Summer'. All are worth reading.
1st book in the Slater brother's trilogy. After reading this, I look forward to reading the remaining 2 - Malachi's story: RIDES A HERO, and then Jaime's: APACHE SUMMER. I only hope they will be at least as good (don't know how they can get better than this one).
DARK STRANGER is a tight story that primarily takes place on the McCahy ranch on the Kansas/Missouri border during the last year or two of the Civil war. The characters are all marked by the effects of this war; secrets, hatred, killing, horror - drawing in secondary characters from the murderous bushwackers, jayhawkers and Quantrille's raiders.
This book is very good and the writing is outstanding. The wounds on the soul and mind of the lead (Cole Slater) is easy to emotionally understand, as well as the lead's (Kristin McCahy). Their journey to their HEA is colored by the effects of the Civil war time frame and I thought their thoughts and reactions normal and based on what one would actually think and feel given similar circumstances.
Straight through to the last page read for me. If all books in the trilogy are as good, it will be another Heather Graham series keeper for me.
Kristin McCahy was a fighter, struggling to keep the remnants of her family and ranch together as the Civil War raged around them.On the day when all hope seemed lost,a stranger rode to her rescue, his guns spitting fire and his eyes ablaze with a passion only she could quench.
His name was Cole Slater, and with him by her side,Kristin no longer had to fight her battles alone.Long after the gunfire faded into silence,Cole would be with her,as together they healed the wounds of their war-torn land and rised their children to greet the bright new dream.
Kristin McCathy's dream of freedom and a life of dignity and self-sufficency had vanished.
The first novel in Graham's famous Civil War trilogy featuring the Slater brothers. Kristin McCay fights to keep her family and ranch together as the Civil War rages around them. Then one day Cole Slater, rides to her rescue, his guns spitting fire and eyes ablaze with a passion only she can quench.
