This is the first full length novel I have read by Burton. I discovered her through one of the short stories she wrote with Lora Leigh. Although she didn't dazzle me I thought she had potential, which is exactly what I thought of this book.
I enjoyed the plot and the characters were interesting enough where I wanted to know more about them. I will definitely go back to read the first and second one and look forward to Isabelle and Dalton's story.
I think this is the first time I read a book where I really liked the heroine in the beginning but by the end I didn't care for her very much. Angelique started out pretty awesome and seemed to genuinely care about her sister, compassionate and sweet. By the end of the book she was kind of the annoying goody goody know-it-all that her sister somewhat thinks of her as. I really felt like she was a traitor to Isabelle, almost like "Oh, now that I have found Ryder I can destroy my sister, for her own good of course." Whatever. Ryder had the opposite effect on me. I liked him enough in the beginning but he gets better throughout the book.
Unfortunately the interaction between Ryder and Angelique felt a little flat for me. I can't quite pinpoint it but when they exchange "I love you"s over and over again, it seemed forced and not romantic at all. The love scenes were okay, nothing to rave about. Perhaps it was the dialogue between Ryder and Angelique that was lacking.
Despite it all I found the book entertaining. I like the cast of side characters and I hope Mandy ends up with Michael because he needs to be shaken up a bit.
