I really hated the first book in this series and I was not shy about giving it a terrible review. The premise was great, but the execution lacked in my opinion. But I went ahead and picked up the second book. I'm glad I did.

This book fulfills the promise of the first book. This is a first rate urban fantasy. You have to read the first book. Just slog through it. It did not feel like I needed a different dictionary to understand the plot. I went right with it. In fact I carried it around with me.

Maxine Kiss, or Hunter Kiss, is trying to keep the demons out of our world. But it's a big world and she feels very very alone in it. She is trying to keep in mind her mother's training but she can't help but feel the need for people around her. For some human contact, people who care about her and people she cares about. This is what makes this book better for me. Her trying to find her own balance. It's great to read and lots of action to keep you interested.

Great stuff. Read the first one to get to this one. :)
Five out of five stars from me.

I actually really enjoy the complexity of Liu's stories. This is no different. A rich cast of characters. And because the main character's "male love interest" is a little creative, I don't find the predictability of the heroine as annoying as I do in other sci-fi/fantasy novels.

I am quickly becoming a fan of Marjorie Liu. The worlds she spins are different and interesting. The struggle to keep the evil from devouring humans, both demon and alien god-like beings who are only energy needing a human skin to keep from going insane with no confines to their energy. Between demon, alien, and Maxine Kiss, demon killer - alien, human, and demon mixed in one well guarded body that is the last survivor of the bloodline that must save human kind or have a child and pass the legacy on to someone else. It's about veil between light and dark riping open and choas reigning free on earth. About the labyrinth that likes many worlds. It is about strength and about knowing who you are. I love the characters. I read book one and kind of felt unsettled, but in reading this book I am seeing the story much more clearly. Love love love it.

Good story, but I became confused at times when the character started dreaming, or jumped from different years, or places.
