I’ve never PM’d my Tour Guide. When I have a question, I pester you folks at the forums – and I’ve never failed to get a helpful response.

Do you ever consult your Tour Guide when you have a problem? Is it best not to bother them if you’re a more experienced swapper? Are they swamped with questions from newbies, or are they lonely and grateful when you contact them? Just curious.

I have probably PM'd my Tour Guide a couple of times when I wanted answers right away. I have to say my PMs get answered very promptly. I am very pleased with my Tour Guide. Great Job!

I am a TG here.  I can tell you that most of us sign up for the job because we want your questions!  The amount of questions I get in any day varies.  We all work Live Help, so sometimes I get a few questions that way each day.  I probably field two or three questions a day from the members assigned to me.  It's manageable most of the time.  However, I will say that most of the people who respond to threads on this forum are often just as knowledgeable as we are.  In fact, I have responded to threads here on occasion (it is rare, I promise) only to be corrected by other members - it's almost impossible to remember everything there is to know about this site!  But really, we love getting your questions, so please don't hold back.

In the year or so I've been here I think I contacted my TG about four times.  Oddly, most of those times were after I got some experience with PBS, and not when I was a brand new member.  As a newbie my impression of the TGs was someone you could contact as a "last resort", when you simply couldn't figure out something after reading the help docs and the forums.  To a certain extent I still view them that way.

I've contacted my TG three times and live help a couple of times.  Like Bernhard not when I first joined but when I was here about four months.  I ran into a series of problems that I just couldn't figure out and didn't want to put the silly questions up here.

I've never contacted mine. I lost her name when the buddy list changed a while ago.  But, at that point I don't even think she was still a TG.

I would imagine that the members that contact us the most are the ones who don't use the forums.  I have gotten an occasional question from someone who I remember from the forums (and usually, they contact me only to try and settle a dispute between themselves and another member) but mostly, those who contact me are not members I have seen around here.

I lost her name when the buddy list changed a while ago.  I just wanted to point out that we didn't lose them (I thought that at first too!). They are no longer listed in the Buddy List, but at the top of your Personal Message Tab.

I think I asked mine a question, maybe two early on, but not recenty. I think of them as help for newbie type questions.

Nothing listed there for me.   I suspect because she is no longer a TG?

ETA: here is a link to a screenshot of my Personal Message tab.http://i43.tinypic.com/15s7n29.jpg

Is that where it should be? Or am I looking in the wrong place (entirely possible) ?

Is that where it should be? Or am I looking in the wrong place (entirely possible) ? Yes, that is where its supposed to be, right in the colored bar where it says you have no messages. Its really odd that they didn't give you an new one if the one you had quit.

I don't think the reassign you one if your TG quits.  Sorry.  :(  If you want, you can buddy me and I'll be your substitute tour guide!

I've sent a couple of messages to mine on questions, and never heard back. I got my questions answered alternate ways (either on the forums or by the other person in the transaction)

I didn't know (or forgot) about Live Help. Any idea of the total number of members that have been assigned to you? I imagine it's a pretty hefty number.

The Help Center and the forums are great ways to get answers to your questions, and learn more about how PBS works! But the thing that sets PBS apart from other swapping sites is the ability to ask your Tour Guide questions about something you may be confused about. While some Tour Guides are online just about every day, some may have more things going on in their personal life and may take longer to respond to your questions. We are all volunteers that enjoy helping members learn their way around this awesome web site!

The amount of questions a Tour Guide gets on a daily basis really varies. It could be anywhere from 1-2 to maybe 7 or more. Some questions may take some time to research. While Tour Guides may know more about how PBS works, and we have resources to ask each other the answer if we are stumped, remember that we don't know everything about PBS either!

If a Tour Guide leaves the program, the members that were assigned to them will not be reassigned. This is one reason we have the Live Help resource. Some members have "adopted" new Tour Guides and place them on their Buddy List. This is another good alternative!

I have been a Tour Guide since the program started in February 2006. Some Tour Guides have thousands of members assigned to them, and it would be very difficult to reassign all the members to another Tour Guide should one resign.

If you have questions about your Tour Guide, or how the program works, or you would like to become a Tour Guide just let me know!

Diane (Tour Guide Coordinator)

Lisa, I also don't seem to have a tour guide any more. I've sent you a buddy request. I may *never* bug but it's nice to know someone I can! :)

I think I contacted mine once when I first joined and had a problem. It took quite awhile for a response and I had more immediate results by posting in the forums. Really though-for the most part I find all my answers in the help docs. I've only had to post questions here a few times about some gray areas in the posting guidelines.

You are correct!  As of today, I have 916 members assigned to me.  I think I've been a TG around one year, maybe.  It ebbs and flows too - whenever PBS gets some press coverage, we are flooded with new members.  But really, most of the 916 don't contact me.  I'd imagine that some are not members anymore or never got into the site.

Jennifer - I accepted!  You are free to "bug" me anytime!

I think of them as help for newbie type questions.

I have to say, this is a huge misconception.  I get a fair amount of Live Help questions for experienced members; we all need help sometimes.  That certainly doesn't mean that questions shouldn't be asked here, of course, that's why this forum is here. :-)  It does pre-date the TGs, though, so please don't ever  hesitate to contact your TG if you have one or Live Help if you don't.
