The Dead Don't Dance - Awakening, Bk 1 Author:Charles Martin Last October, after the soybeans had peaked at four feet, the corn spiraled to almost double that, and the wisteria had shed its purple, a breeze picked up, pushed out the summer heat, and woke Maggie. She rolled over, tapped me on the shoulder and said, Let's go swimming. We held hands down to the river where Maggie took a swan dive into th... more »e South Carolina moonlight.
And so the story begins for Dylan and Maggie Styles, a young couple in love, who wait expectantly for the birth of their first son. But events take a tragic turn in the delivery room, and their child is delivered stillborn. When Maggie hemorrhages and slips into a coma, Dylan too slips into what can only be described as a walking coma, holding vigil at Maggie's bedside. Usually tough and self-reliant, an outdoorsman and a farmer, Dylan finds that everything he has known and relied upon, even his deepest sense of who he is as a person, is suddenly thrown into doubt. In a desolate place, naked and alone, he asks Why live? and hopes someone is listening who has the answer. Through friends and grace-filled moments of insight, the defenses around Dylan slowly break away, but it will take a second tragedy--and an anxious period of wrestling with God--to truly awaken him from his stupor and open him up to a new life.« less
This is perhaps one of my favorite novels ever. Absolutely riveting, but it was so emotional I couldn't read it in one sitting. I had to keep taking breaks because I'd get too worked up. Lyrical writing, beautiful imagery, and soulful characters.
This is one of my favorite novels of all time. I am afraid I may never again read another one this good. This is a strongly character-driven novel in the voice of a man waiting for his wife to awake from a coma. I was hooked from the very first page and finished it in two days. Dillan's love for his wife is heartwrenching and so pure. This is Charles Martin's first book, and in my opinion, his best. Have the tissues ready for this one! I can't wait to read it again.
A wonderful storyline that has you crying, smiling(albeit somewhat sadly) and feeling wistful. Mr Martin has a very distinctive style of writing that captures the attitudes and speech of the South and small town living perfectly. He writes with a style that can be heart-rendingly stark one moment and lushly beautiful in another. His characters come to life on the pages and you find yourself wanting the book not to end.
I was immediately caught in this book. It captures your attention quickly, and has good messages along with it. The characters were great, and very like how I view the south. I loved the interaction between his students and himself. Plus, his heartache brought together a great story. Looking forward to "Maggie", the sequel of this novel.

This book is Charles Martin's first, not as good as the later several. I've loved his most recent books "When Crickets Cry", "Wrapped in Rain" and "Chasing Fireflies". A Christian author whose writing style is excellent.
This is a lovely, lyrical book with wonderful imagery. It draws emotion out of you and gives you a glimpse of your inner self that is rarely shared or acknowledged. I highly recommend this book and can hardly wait to read his other novels.
