Dead on the Delta - Annabelle Lee, Bk 1
Author: Stacey Jay
Once upon a time, fairies were the stuff of bedtime stories and sweet dreams. Then came the mutations, and the dreams became nightmares. Mosquito-size fairies now indulge their taste for human blood -- and for most humans, a fairy bite means insanity or death. — Luckily, Annabelle Lee isn’t most humans. The hard-drinking, smart-mouthed, bic...  more »

I had a hard time getting into this book and never really 'clicked' with it. Just couldn't seem to care about the main character or her life. I felt that the concept of homicidal fairies held much promise but this book didn't fulfill it. Maybe the next book will flesh things out more but, honestly, I won't be buying it.

Awesome start to a new series. I love all of Stacey Jay's YA books so I was extremely excited about her first Urban Fanasy debut. I was not dissapointed. This book had everything: paranormal, mystery, action, and just a faint hint of romance. It was left open for a sequel which I am eagerly awaiting, because there were a few questions left unanswered.

Annabelle Lee is not your typical heroine. Shes an FCC agent living in the deep south in a world where mosquito sized fairies are very deadly. Because she is immune to the bites, her job is collecting samples in the area beyond the iron gates for the Fairy Containment Control (FCC). Shes a slacker and uses alcohol as her crutch.

There is a lot going on in this book. Annabelle is investigating the death of an 8 year old (of which whom her friend is arrested for) An old flame returns with the FBI, and shes fighting her feelings for her new guy, Cane; and trying to take down a string of breeze houses (think: meth house) without getting herself killed in the process.

There were quite a few twists and turns within this book, and a new character was introduced towards the end that Im sure will return in the next book. All in all, I highly enjoyed it.

Initially, I had a hard time both getting into the story, and liking the heroine. The storyline is a bit all over the place for the first half of the book, and I wish that the author had done more with the actual killer fairies plot, and with the whole magic storyline in general. She kind of drops the ball with this until the very end, and then left me with a lot of unanswered questions.

Annabelle is a strange character. I really didn't like her at all at first, and had very little sympathy for her "problems", as they mostly seemed to be of her own making. She is a very "prickly" character with an alcohol and attitude problem. I found myself liking her more towards the end of the book, because the author lets us see into her life and lets us in on her secret do-good projects, like her saving a cat, donating huge amounts of money to an orphanage, looking out for a young girl, etc. I really didn't get that into either of her love interests either, as I didn't find the emotions all that believable. I hope the author can do more with this in the next book.

I think the story was a strange cross between a thriller, a paranormal, and a fantasy. The author should have chosen one genre and tried to stick with it a bit more, because it would have made things a bit less confusing. There were also parts of the story that really didn't even need to be there, like Annabelle's relationship with her "second mother". It really just bogged things down.

Overall, though, I found myself glued to the second half of the book- staying up until 2 am to finish it. I think the author left off with some potential for an interesting and different series. I just hope that she can follow through with a more developed story.

I loved this book! I was excited about something new, getting tired of the same old vampires and werewolves. This was great! The main character has had a hard life and it shows. She's human, makes mistakes, has fears and I loved that about her. She wasn't some "super" human with specials powers, but one of a few with immunity to fairy venom. I was rooting for her the whole way thru. Can't wait to read the next book in this series!

I couldn't finish it. Lots of reasons for that. Annabelle is crass and lazy, she says herself she doesn't care about anything. So how am I supposed to care about her or what she does? Easy, I didn't. Her relationship with Cain baffled me and as soon as Hitch showed up and the love triangle began I put it down. Really didn't care at that point.

Then there was the writing itself. Gritty and disgusting just to be disgusting. Didn't need that much description for bodily fluids.

I think this author is just not for me.
