After reading the first book in the series, I was a bit hesitant to check out the second book. I am glad I did. The introduction of Beatrix Potter as one of Kate's new friends could have been over the top, but the author uses her well. I especially enjoyed how Charles is subtly introducing "science" to help solve crimes even when the end result might not be the one wished for. The limited acceptance of Kate as a social peer is also addressed thus giving a further glimpse into how the social classes were divided. I look forward to reading the next book.

I find Victorian mysteries so--mysterious, much more than the here and now. This was wonderfully written, an enchanting mystery of the era. As usual i have started a series out of order, so now i will look for book 1. This book can stand alone but i did like it enough to find the beginning book and read that also. This is a charming author that can hold your interest with lots of detail and intrigue.

I loved this book, more for the relationship between the heroine and Beatrix Potter than the mystery. The authors develop personalities so well, and give a wonderful feeling of the time period.
