Usually I like to read the first book in a series to get the background - MC, setting, other characters etc. But the reviews on this first book in the series has terrible reviews on both Amazon and PBS. The second book got better reviews as do the rest of the books in the series.

Those who have read this series, is it really necessary that I read the first book in the series or can I start with the 2nd book and go from there, knowing the background of the characters, setting etc.? I'm trying to set up my books for the upcoming cozy mystery challenge. Thanks ahead.

Connie, I personally would read them in order.  I didn't think the first one was bad, in fact, I enjoyed it enough that I started putting my name on the WL for all of the books.

Thanks Una, will do. I guess no one else has read the first book, thought I would get more answers.

I'm all caught up in this series except for the recent Christmas one.  I didn't much care for the first one but I've liked the next ones, and I liked the first one enough to keep reading.  Though this isn't one I purchase I get them all through Scribd.com  its 8.99 a mth for a subscription and all of these books are usually up on there within a month of being published.  I've just had such a busy winter I haven't gotten a chance to read the Christmas Cater one yet * sigh*  I was really getting into the series too...  You could try it and if you find yourself hating it move on to the next one.  I don't think you would miss a huge amount of stuff!  Also it gets more 4 & 5 starts on amazon then it gets 3 & 2 &1 stars total.
