Ever the dutiful servant of the king and the responsiblities to his role as Keeper of the King's Peace, Baldwin is drawn in the the precarious intrigues of national politics when his friend Bishop Stapledon asks if he could pursue the whereabouts of his nephew who was sent to spy on a certain frenchman and is now missing. While pursuing his duty he is able to once more work with his friend Simon Puttock, but even this is little succor for him when his is put at direct odds against the tool of the Dispensers.
We're also introduced to a new character, Sir Richard de Welles, a coroner from Devon who is quite the colorful character. He's a man who knows how to get things done and is a walking oxymoron for our friends Simon and Baldwin.
As always the story is based on a real event from the period and gives the reader a good insight into the feelings and events of the period and how close to the rope many lived even ones seemingly in positions of privilege and power; there was no such thing as flying below the radar.
