For the last few years I'd been in a state of bliss -- living under a self-imposed Forgetting Charm, because I so did not want to go into the family business. What I wanted was a glamorous career in New York City and the opportunity for a normal life -- buying designer shoes on sale, dating guys from craigslist, Web surfing for organic dim s...  more »

Okay, I read the back of this book and decided to give this book a try. It had an interesting premise.

I got about twenty pages into the book. Her mom is immortal through a complicated process but all immortals have a weakness, an Achilles heel if you like. Her mom's weakness? The thing that nearly killed her? Her husband snoring next to her in bed.

Yes, she is immortal ONLY if no one snores around her. So if you were in a fight with her, fake snore, voila, You win!

I just put the book down. That's a little further than I like suspending my disbelief.

Well, it started out kinda cute & I thought I was going to like it, but not.... the dialogue became so tiresome and there was one "arguement" scene between the main character and a Godess that was so inane & just pointless where they called each other "stupid white girl" and "dipwad" AARRGG!! I suppose it was meant to be funny but it was really witless. It just seemed to go downhill from there. The main character is the daughter of the Grim Reaper and took a "forgetting spell" so she could live a normal life until her father is kidnapped & the forgetting spell is removed so she can be the temp. Grim Reaper while they try to locate her sister & her father. The concept was promising but the story failed to deliver.

I thought that this book was good. It had an interesting storyline and interesting characters in it. Knowing that this is a first book in a series, I know that things need to be explained to the reader and a clueless character is usually how the author does this. But I found that Callie was a little to clueless for my tastes. There are times I just wanted to jump into the book and smack her with something. I am hoping that her character matures as the series continues.

This was a fun, light read. The book is narrated by the main character Calliope and the tone is really chatty and friendly. It gives you a good sense of her personality right from the very first page. She's sweet, well-meaning, and dedicated, but she's not the brightest or the most ambitious girl around. And that's okay. It's kind of a nice break from the usual tough-as-nails, hyper-competent, tortured kind of female protagonists that are so common in this genre (not that I don't like that too!). The world Calliope inhabits is a fun mish-mash of elements from all kinds of mythologies.

If you're looking for a fun bit of fluff that you can breeze through pretty quickly, this would be a good book to choose.
