Philip Moresby, Earl of Chadwick, is convinced love and marriage shackle a man. But if masquerading lovely and penniless Margaret Abney as Lord Hendricks' long-lost daughter requires that he wed her first, he is willing to sacrifice his freedom. Hendricks is the only member of the House of Commons who might influence the bill Philip has struggled to pass, and Margaret is a convenient pawn-until passion persuades Philip that his casual disregard for her is the most dangerous deception of all.

Margaret is no stranger to callous misuse at the hands of the aristocracy. Her own father had cruelly abandoned her and her mother when he inherited a title, and she expects little better from the Earl of Chadwick. Determined to use Philip to her own advantage, Margaret reasons that his proposal offers an unseen chance to avenge the suffering she and her mother endured-even if it demanded a disturbing promise to mislead a kind old man. Yet once they are married, Margaret cannot deny her growing desire for Philip, but can she trust in a love born of secrets and lies...?
