After reading Angels and Demons and The DaVinci Code, I was expecting something different, and this book was a disappointment. Too much technological ramblings just seemed to override the action and political intrigue. Not a favorite.

I loved The DaVinci Code and Angels and Demons, so I bought this book hoping it would be just as great. It's definitely a page turner, but I didn't love it as much as the other two.

Thought provoking book--made me think about a meteorite landing on Earth and what that would mean for the human species. Well researched and of course, the "suprise" person at the end blew me away! Dan Brown always does that!

First off I must tell you Stuart Woods is a truely amzing author. As for Chiefs, I couldn't put the book down. I love the characters he puts in his books. They come alive as you are reading and you can't wait to find out what's going to happen to them next. I've ordered all the "Will Lee" series so I can get right into the next one as soon as I finish the one I'm reading.

This is Woods' first book and just a little bit different from all his subsequent books. While it technically isn't part of the Will Lee series, I recommend reading this first.

The mystery begins in 1920 when the first body of a young boy is found, naked and brutalized, near the small town of Delano, Georgia. Dan Brown is a very good story teller. I don't know how much of the science he describes is based in truth, but it was fun to suspend belief for a while and get into this action packed thriller. I like the strong female characters he writes as well. The lead character finds strength she never knew she had.

When the pick story twist was coming, I thought for sure I had it pegged and had I been right I told myself I would not like the book, but I wasn't right. He really got me.

The time is now and President Zachary Herney is facing a very tough reelection. His opponent, Senator Sedgwick Sexton, is a powerful man with powerful friends and a mission: to reduce NASA's spending and move space exploration into the private sector. He has numerous supporters, including many beyond the businesses who will profit from this because of the embarrassment of 1996, when the Clinton administration was informed by NASA that proof existed of life on other planets. That information turned out to be premature, if not incorrect. (This story is true; I repeat, Dan Brown's research is very, very good.) The embattled president is assured that a rare object buried deep in the Arctic ice will prove to have far-reaching implications on America's space program. The find, however, needs to be verified.

Enter Rachel Sexton, a gister for the National Reconnaissance Office. Gisters reduce complex reports into single-page briefs, and in this case the president needs that confirmation before he broadcasts to the nation, probably ensuring his reelection. It's tricky because Rachel is the daughter of his opponent. Rachel is thrilled to be on the team traveling to the Arctic circle. She is a realist about her father's politics and has little respect for his stand on NASA, but Senator Sexton cannot help but have a problem with her involvement.

Adventure, romance, murder, skullduggery, and nail-biting tension ensue. By the end of Deception Point, the reader will be much better informed about how our space program works and how our politicians react to new information. Bring on the next Dan Brown thriller!

But befoe she can warn the President, Racheland Michael are ambushed by a deadly team of assassins. Struggling to rebound from a series of embarrassing blunders that have jeopardized its political life at the start of this lively thriller, NASA makes an astounding discovery: there is a meteor embedded deep within the arctic ice. And it isn't just any meteor. Inside the huge rock, which crashed to earth in 1716, are fossils of giant insects proof of extraterrestrial life. Yet, given NASA's slipping reputation, the question arises: Is the meteor real or a fake? That uncertainty dogs NASA and its supporters in Brown's latest page-flipper, a finely polished amalgam of action and intrigue. Trying to determine the truth are intelligence agent Rachel Sexton and popular oceanographer Michael Tolland, both among the first to suspect something is amiss when the meteor is pulled from the ice. Their doubts quickly make them the targets of a mysterious death squad controlled by someone or something that doesn't want the public to hear the meteor may be a fraud. Together, Sexton and Tolland scramble across arctic glaciers, take refuge on ice floes, are rescued by a nuclear submarine, then find themselves trapped aboard a small research vessel off the coast of New Jersey. All the while, the nation's capital is buzzing as to whether NASA has engaged in deception. Or is NASA just a dupe for aerospace companies that have long wanted a bigger share of space contracts? Brown (Angels & Demons) moves into new territory with his latest. It's an excellent thriller a big yet believable story unfolding at breakneck pace, with convincing settings and just the right blend of likable and hateful characters. He's also done his research, folding in sophisticated scientific and military details that make his plot far more fulfilling than the norm.

Was Dan Brown watching the X-Files while writing this one? Some simularities in plot....

I'm not sure what order his books were written, but this one is much better than Angels & Demons and Digital Fortress. The ending is more seamless with the beginning, and the book's action takes off sooner, so there is less wading thru preliminaries. The main characters are also introduced in a less rapid fashion, so you'll be able to keep them streight right off the bat.

Something is under the Ice on the polar cap which will prove extratrestrial life introduced life onto the Earth, and some people will go to great lengths to have it introduced to the world.

Who is using who?
Will the good guys or the baddies prevail?

This book has the best ending of any of Dan Brown's and is the first of his books I can honestly be enthusiastic about.

Well, I did like this book better than Angels & Demons, but that isn't saying much. Brown has a definite formula that he follows, making his books extremely formulaic and predictable. I knew who the controller was before the book was half over.

The writing is also of a poor quality. "He was muscular and lithe with eyes as desolate as the topography on which he was stationed." What kind of simile is that? The topography? Brown's frequent reliance on sentences such as "Geologist Charles Brophy had endured the saveage splendor of this terrain for years, and yet nothing could prepare him for a fate as barbarous and unnatural as the one about to befall him." Gee, nothing kills the suspense faster than knowing the guy's fate as he's being introduced!

The story has interesting potential, and the technologies presented are most intriguing although I am highly skeptical of Brown's claims that All technologies described in this novel exist. A massive government deception such as this would not be at all surprising, however.

I'm surprised his books do so well. They're formulaic and badly written. I hated this one. I heard he used to be an English teacher -- no wonder people lament the state of education if this is any indication. Plus, he does one of the things in all of his books that I really, really despise: the women, not matter how highly educated, are called by the first name; the men their last.

Dan Brown has a talent for writing these 'beyond belief' adventure stories. Still, I've read them all and now wait for him to write more. This one is as good as any other Dan Brown book. My only criticism is the unbelievable escapes from certain death our hero and heroin have. (Rachel Sexton and Michael Tolland in this case).

It's also a very quick read, lots of short action packed sections and chapters.

Marjorie Tench is also as nasty a character as I've encountered since reading of Myron Bolitar's arch enemies (Harlan Coben books). This was my first Brown reading. I was skeptical about there being undistorted fossils in chondruled rock, but I decided to "accept" Brown's solution to get on with the plot.
