This morning I had to decline a request for a book because I could not meet the person's conditions.  Now the book seems to have disappeared from my book shelf. It doesn't show up anywhere on my account, but if I do a search for it, it comes up. What's happening with this? Thanks in advance for your insights.

I THINK (but am not sure) that it has to stay off your list until the next person accepts or denies it otherwise the system will think you should get it...??

Am also wondering if, when I deny a book, do I get put back in line as #1 or do I get put at the very end of the line again?

Check your bookshelf. It's probably there with the gray ! on the one-hour wait for buyer's remorse. Then it will turn up either ordered on your front page or on a WL-hold.

when you decline a book you keep your spot in #1 position

Nope, it's not there. I declined the request at 7AM and 4 hours later, it's still not on my bookshelf. I'm not that concerned, just curious.

Wendy, did you get an email from PBS about that transaction?

If you decline because of conditions it should put it right back on your shelf.  Did you accept the request first and then cancel it? That would keep it from your shelf.  Was it a WL book? Is it showing up as being on WL hold-not the 1hr but the 2day?

Did you choose "Does Not Meet Conditions"? Or did you choose "I cannot mail this book"?

No letter from PBS, only the first one saying that the book had been requested. It had been on wish list hold for very close to 48 hours before it was accepted.  It is now not showing up at all.  I chose Does not meet conditions and pmed requestor telling them why I could not send the book. I did not accept and then cancel the transaction.

Doesn't it make a difference if the book is WL'd by more than that 1 person?

I thought that if only 1 person has the book WL'd and you decline due to conditions that if there was no one else requesting the book you couldn' t post it until the person got their book...or something like that.  But would have thought you could have the book listed it just couldn't go to that person that was declined.

I got this from the help docs so it seems like the book should be on your shelf

  • That book does not lose its place in the "FIFO" line
  • It simply goes back into its previous place
  • The requestor's request is passed to the next person offering the book.
  • If this is a Wish List book
    • and there are other people Wishing for the book, the requestor goes back onto the Wish List at the same place "in line" and the book is offered to the next Wishing member.
    • and there is no one else Wishing for the book, the book is removed from the requestor's Wish List.
      • the book goes onto the requestor's Reminder List
      • the requestor will not be able to Wish List the book again until this copy has been sent out to another requestor (and there are no active copies in the system).
  • This permanently declines this copy of the book to this requestor:
    • the requestor will not be able to re-request this book from this sender, even if Requestor Conditions are then toggled to "No" in the Account Settings.
    • The requestor will need to wait for another copy of the book if there aren't any others available at that time.

That could be it: there's only one person WL for it now.  Hopefully someone will post it for them soon and then yours can go on your shelf.  Or maybe you'll get luckly and someone else will add it to their WL.

Just a thought - how is your shelf sorted?  Some books won't show up when they are sorted by author, even though they are there...You might try resorting your shelf and see if it shows up.

From what I can see of the above, you should still have the book on your shelf, even if the other person was the only wisher.  Are you sure it didn't just go to the next person and is still on hold?

You hit the nail on the head, Lindsey. Once I sorted alphabetically, it reappeared, which in and of itself is weird because it was on my  bookshelf the whole time it was wishlisted. Oh well, just another of life's little mysteries. And chatting with you all killed some time in a dreadfully boring day. Thanks for all the input.

Ah, glad it is solved, lol!

The only reason I know that is because I once was trying to add a book to my wishlist and kept getting a message that said it was full - even though when I looked at my WL it said I only had 197 books posted.  Someone figured out that when you sort by author, not all the books show up, and I did actually have 200 on my WL - I just couldn't see them until I sorted by title!

Glad you figured it out.

I just wanted to clarify that when there is only one wisher on the book, the poster's book does return to their shelf and the book is removed from the WL on the other person and put on their reminder list until the book is requested. A couple poster had it the other way around. (I know this because I currently have a book in that status, I can't re-WL it until the one that doesn't meet my conditions is requested).
