This sounds like an interesting book.  I have Thomas Cahill's Mysteries of the Middle Ages and the Beginnings of the Modern World, and am about half way through it.

I'm going to have to start Mysteries of the Middle Ages over again.  I pulled my usual trick and started reading a couple of other books before I finished it.  So far the jury is out on the book.  It is pretty "basic" history, but then I'm a medievalist so I know more than the average reader who may pick up the book.
