I received a book last week that was printed with the PBS label with delvery confirmation included, but there was no postage attached.  In the upper right corner, it just said the usual "estimated media mail rate $2.33 - do not tape over stamps" or something close to that.  It was definitely not the purchased postage that you can get from the site.

So, is it possible that the sender paid postage but there was just no evidence of it anywhere?

Maybe they paid at the post office and the metered postage sticker came off?  Though it's far more likely that it just slipped through the system.  I had one arrive like that.

A few times I've brought books with the printed DC to the PO and they though it had postage. I had to point out that it only had DC. I'd rather pay the postage than take the chance of it coming back or arrive postage due.   It's possible that the person hit the wrong button (meant to use the printed postage) and didn't notice or the postage came off.  Somehow it slipped through.

You can still use stamps.  You just have to hand it to a postal clerk if it's over 13oz if you don't want to use the printed postage.
