Volume I of "The Chronicles of Deryni" trilogy, called "Deryni Rising". King Kelson in plot and counterplots, magic and church priests, honor and dishonor, while the few remaining Deryni are hunted to their end. Vol II "Deryni Checkmate" and III "High Deryni" are the remaining titles. Lots of twists, lots of surprises, you'll have a hard time putting any of these three books down. If you read Vol I, you'll have to have the remainders. Additionally, there is "The Deryni Archives" which has seven short stories covering 200 years of 'history'. Ms Kurtz has done an excellent job with laying these stories out.
Fantasy. First in the Deryni series. Good vs. evil, a young man thrust into adulthood and responsibility too soon, etc. All the trappings of typical fantasy, but told well with character depth and dimension.
The mysterious forces of magic and the superior power of the Church combine to challenge the rule of young Kelson, who came to the throne when his father was brutally murdered by the sorceress Charissa.
An interesting blend of historical fact with fantasy fiction. Katherine Kurtzs world is a rich tapestry of medieval and fantasy. She creates a story that is very engaging, pulling you into characters deeplyeven the ones you hate. Very good.
The start of the Deryni series. I wanted to love them. I read 9 books from the series. They were quite good in some places and not that great in others. The author spends far too much time relating every small detail of the religious beliefs of the characters and it slows the story down in places to a crawl.
