Desdemona is living a scrambled life. Her father is hopeless. Her brother and sister are a handful and school is stressful. Then everything starts to get worse. The landlord is looking for an excuse to evict Desdemonas family, dating her father's girlfriend, and planning on rezoning the land to build a shopping mall. When Desdemona verathanes her hair, she takes drastic measures and is surprised to find the school's most popular boy standing right beside her in the middle of the chaos.

This is a coming of age story that will be very familiar to modern readers. Though it was originally published in a different time, the story spans generations and depicts a life less extraordinary, just like the lives of the readers it inspires.
