reviewed The Devil and the Deep: A Guide to Nautical Myths Superstitions on
My 8 and 10 yr-olds enjoyed this book while doing a unit study on New World explorers. There are a few risque parts mentioning naked ladies being good luck to see swimmimg, and cartoonish renditions of ladies' breasts on a ship's figurehead.
Back of the book says: "Anyone who has ever been to the sea will have found it hard to ignore the many myths, legends, and superstitions attaching to life afloat. {This book} takes a light-hearted look at the often very serious world of nautical myths and superstitions, delving into their origins and meaning."
"Alphbetically arranged for ease of reference, and liberally sprinkled with Owen Hill's cartoons, the book treats the subject in an appealingly tonge-in-cheek manner. An ideal bunkside read."
