A look at morality with a suspenseful plot and a clever ending!
In depth, thought provoking novel.
i finished the book in 2 days, i couldnt put it down, he is my favorite writer!
This was a thought provoking book. A story of the tug of war between good and evil.
I LOVE this book. Paulo Coelho's writing flows off the page like liquid mercury. Once you step into this world I didn't want to leave. Somehow everything he writes manages to be applicable to whatever is going on in your life at that time, and shed some light on it. It's like magic.
This was a rather interesting, psychologically-driven story told in deceptively simple language. The question of good vs. evil and the drivers are, of course, universal, and I appreciated the way Coelho drew on more than Christian myths in order to weave the story. I'll be thinking on this one for a while.
Very thought provoking book about the nature of good and evil. I read Coelho's book "The Alchemist" which is supposed to be his best work but I have found that The Devil and Miss Prym and Veronica Decides to Die much better books. Perhaps this is because they are mostly from the women perspective. This book will keep you thinking about it for a long time
This book is thought-provoking in that it tries to get you to contemplate your own opinions of whether the heart of humankind is ultimately good or evil. I found the book to be a fast read.
Good book. The Devil comes to a small town and offers them gold to kill someone in the village. Will they do it?
Excellent story with some great twists and great ending.
A great story of the good and evil that battle inside everyone. It's called his "novel of temptation" which is intriguing before you read the first page. A stranger arrives in a remote village and tests everyone who lives there. He brings a backpack full of gold and makes his offer. If the citizens commit murder, they get the gold. Manipulation, self reflection, and bargaining ensue. He deals with personal limits, morality, fear and regret. I chose it for my reading group so more people can get aquainted with his work.
Very different, interesting and thought provoking.
A stranger arrives at the remote village of Viscos, carrying with him a backpack containing a notebook and eleven gold bars. He comes searching for the answer to a question that torments him: Are human beings, in essence, good or evil? In welcoming the mysterious foreigner, the whole village becomes an accomplice to his sophisticated plot, which will forever mark their lives.
A novel of temptation by the internationally bestselling author Paulo Coelho, The Devil and Miss Prym is a thought-provoking parable of a community devoured by greed, cowardice, and fear--as it struggles with the choice between good and evil.
This book is a fast read but is very thought provoking. It is a parable about the struggle between good and evil. The two main characters, the heroine and the villain, represent both sides of our character. The language is loaded with meaning and highly symbolic. At times the story switches from a personal story of Miss Prym to a group-oriented story about the town. I highly recommend this book to those who enjoy short, easy-reading stories with little gems of wisdom throughout.
