Hagerman made an impatient gesture. "Not now sir!" He saw an obstinate expression and yielded ungraciously. The card said that Mr. Horatio Pettbone resided at the Kimball Hotel in Eddy Street. He was associated with the San Francisco Crusader and took General Commissions. "Well, Mr. Pettibone," Hagerman said, "I do all my business in the bank. If you'll excuse me?" He set off with quick small steps. The stranger kept pace. "Might we talk a moment?"
