Search - Devlin's Light

So based on the description on the back of the book (the original, not the reprint) I was expecting a well written romantic suspense, which is what I‘ve come to expect from Ms. Stewart. This was such a huge disappointment, that I know that I'll be avoiding all her earlier works from now on, and it may be a while before I read any of her current books as well. It was glaringly obvious that this was an early attempt at writing for Ms. Stewart and to be honest I question the sanity (not to mention the skill) of her publisher and editors for making this available to the masses.

I was led to believe that this was the story of India Devlin finding her brothers' killer with the aid of her brothers best friend and her new love interest. While there was the mystery to be solved it only took about 1/5 of the book…It seems that after introducing the mystery, Ms. Stewart promptly forgot about it, only to remember it and the very end of the novel in order to tie everything up. The rest of the book is more of a guide to 'Growing up and living on the Delaware bay….including numerous lessons on local wildlife and family recipes!

When the heroine (who's perspective is the one we are most provided with) isn't engaged in an internal monologue, describing the seemingly endless Devin's Light traditions and history, or repeating herself, she's dealing with her job as a prosecutor and becoming the guardian of her brothers (step)daughter and deciding whether or not to move back home... While a romance is part of the plot, neither it, nor the hero are interesting enough to make up for the rest of the novel.

I also have to respectfully disagree with the reviewer who compared this to anything written by Nora Roberts…they were nothing alike! While NR writes intricate stories with well thought out characters, this particular book, reads more like a promotional pamphlet than a romance let alone a romantic suspense!

This was a wonderfully tender romance that reads like a Nora Roberts book. The characters are well developed and the love story between India (Indy) and Nick is tender and realistic.
While India is looking for the killer of her brother she finds herself drawn to her brothers best friend and the last person to talk to Ry before he died. On top of all of this is Corrie Ry's adopted daughter from a previous marriage. Corrie is a great secondary character that helps move the plot along.

It was great to read a romance book that touched my emotions and was fun to read. This is a great romance that you don't want to miss out on.

Horrible. Could not get past chapter 2. Too much ditsy rambling, and the characters seemed flimsy. Would not recommend

The blurb on the back of the book says that India Devlin returned to her hometown when her brother was found murdered on the steps of the lighthouse on their family property. She wants to uncover who killed Ry. Her brother's friend, Nick Enright, offers to help her investigation. Soon they are undeniably drawn to each other.

The blurb sounded like an interesting romantic suspense story. This is actually a very slow moving contemporary romance. I only finished 100 pages before giving up on it. India really didn't seem all that interested in finding out who killed her brother. She hasn't gone to the police about it. She just confides her theories to Nick. Much of the story is about Ry's six-year-old step-daughter and who will take care of her. I was in no doubt that India would volunteer for the job. My rating: 1 Star.
