While I read mounds of historical fiction, Diana Gabaldon still tops the list for me in historical nonfiction because of her rich addition of so much fine detail about daily life--things it seems other authors don't even try to attempt. Without a doubt she leaves you feeling like you're right there living with them, and who could not fall in love with Jamie? Book 7 is due out Sept 2009: An Echo in the Bone, already available for preorder on Amazon for only like less than $19 I think. Maybe it's planned to be shorter than Book 6? I'm sure I paid twice that for book 6. Why she started the Lord John Grey series though is beyond me--ugh. I also once read some of her own recommended favorite authors and tried them out and couldn't figure out what she saw in them. She is so vastly superior. Anyway I could go on forever, but hope some of you felt the series was worth 10 stars also. Minus the stupid overindulgence in unnecessary sex in books 1-6. Maybe they're over it in book 7..they were getting on in years. Ha ha. I hope book 7 doesn't disappoint.

I kind of feel like my "girl card" is about to get revoked for saying this, but I am neutral on the Outlander books.  I've read the first two, and haven't worked up the energy to start the third one.

It's funny I was just looking at her books on my shelf today and was wondering when the next one was due out.  Thanks for the info!

Don't mean to burst your bubble, but i would take that Amazon release date for An Echo in the Bone with a large grain of salt.  I'm a huge fan of Diana Gabaldon's books also and I frequently visit her website (http://www.cco.caltech.edu/~gatti/gabaldon/gabaldon.html) and she has mentioned there several times that Amazon has not hesitated to make up release dates for her books out of thin air.  I'm not saying it WON'T come out on that day, I'm just saying, don't be upset if that date turns out to be untrue.  I just looked at Diana's website and she hasn't even said if she's done writing the book yet or not.  I hope it's due out soon but I'm not holding my breath.

I'm resurrecting this post from January because I just read on Diana Gabaldon's website yesterday that the release date for An Echo in the Bone IS going to be September 22.  So this time Amazon was correct.

I have had the first Outlander book sitting on my shelf forever, and just have not been motivated to start it!  I've been debating whether to do it for the challenge Bonus book; I feel like I'm missing out on something.....

Yes you are missing out on somehting - you're missing a really really great book!  Please read it right away then start on the sequels - Dragonfly in Amber, Voyager, Drums of Autumn, The Fiery Cross, A Breath of Snow and Ashes.  Then you will be ready for the next book - and there is supposed to be one more also after An Echo in the Bone.

Guess it's time to check to see if it's on order at the library and get my name in the queue.

:) Now, I just need to get motivated to read my hefty copy of A Breath of Snow and Ashes... I want to read it, but the thickness of it makes me want to wait until I can give it my undivided attention... LOL

I'm a Gabaldon fan, it's already pre-ordered.  I agree w/ the comments on the gratuitous sex and the Lord John series (? huh? why? he's just sooo not a captivating character, i can think of other characers with cameos in her Outlander series who better deserve their own tomes), but she still has set the bar for detail and character development, IMHO.

I read the first 3 books (I think) and then decided to pause and go back. I'm enjoying them so much that I don't want to rush through them and then be antsy for the next book. I actually own them all, though!

Does anyone know if Echo in the Bone is the last book of the series?  I know it can't last forever but I sure hate to see it end.  :(

Actually I think they're closer to 50, but also, some of the story at least seems to be shifting to the younger generation - Roger and Brianna.

LOL, Colleen! And just what's wrong with being 50-something? ;-)

Thanks for the heads up on the series. I love it. I've listened to the audiobooks so many times I've lost count.

I absolutely ADORE the series. I've read the first four and I'm waiting for the next two to come in at the bookstore. I ordered them a while ago..They really are the best books I've read in a loong time, and they're on my all time favorites list. What a treasure to have discovered the series!

I love this series too!

Mimi it took me a year after reading Outlander to start the second one, but once they made it to America I was hooked. I think I might start the series over again.

AAhh, please don't burst my bubble, I have Lord John on my TBR!

I'm probably in the minority, but I like Lord John. The first novel in the series is my least favorite, but I still enjoyed the story.
