I found this book a bit boring at times. Mary spoke of people and things that seemed frivolous at times. The writing at the time was a bit hard to understand at times even for this educated person. I found the last few chapers most interesting. The book could have been shortened even more than the original diaries because of some of the frivolous content. I feel the editors could have done a much better job of attempting to explain what and to whom Mary Chestnut was refering. It would have been better to have put more information as footnotes or even follow up chapters.
