I did not like this book. It says on the cover a story of humor, heartbreak and hope. I found no humor in it or hope. She writes several times that other "fat" people disgust her, she is awful to her family and herself. I found nothing inspirational in this book and my guess is there is no promised sequel because the auhtor gained all the weight back.
Great conversational tone..thoroughly enjoyed the author's story of her long journey into weight loss.
Anyone with food issues, too much, that is, will read this book and say, yes, yes, YES! That is me! That is true. I KNOW that. I DO that. I am not talking about anyone overweight due to medical problems, or having had a ton of babies. A simple food addict, with perhaps an emotional issue or two, maybe not. Despite Dr Phil and all the other diet experts, not all food addicts are "eating their problems."
This is the diary--one that covers years of up and down the scale--of a fat housewife, and her battle to lose weight. Harder for her, it seems that except for her husband and children, the entire rest of her family is obese, as are numerous friends. At times the reading of the same issues over and over gets tedious, and I skimmed pages. But then something would catch my eye. Yes! My heart would pound. I UNDERSTAND!
She covers a lot of ground in this book, from her pain over Elizabeth Taylor getting bigger and bigger, dieting back to a size five, only to pack on the weight again. Her sympathy and understanding when Oprah did the same, and her rage and disgust with Joan Rivers and her Elizabeth Taylor jokes.
A good, interesting book, but really, in my opinion, if you don't have a weight issue, this book will probably bore you. And, if you are looking for the secret answer to how she lost about 150 pounds after years of struggle, here it is in a nutshell:
Determination, discipline. And a very low calorie diet.
Fantastic book! I felt like I was reading about myself sometimes! Before and After pics on the back cover, with an update at the end of the book about reaching her goal.
True account of a woman's struggle to lost weight. I loved this book, I could relate to so much! I also liked the ending-VERY true, candid, honest...I think she's done a sequel or update since this book? Not sure.
Good book. A little hard to get interested in a first, but it gets better as you go.
This is a tough review because I did enjoy reading the book, I could relate to some of it and I applaud the effort to write the diary etc, but it is not an effective tool to motivate weight loss, the writer has yo yoed so much that you have no idea what her weight is now and she has not gotten to her dream weight making it look as if it is as unattainable as she envisioned. I am not sure if it is worth reading, it is a good book but maybe it would have been better if it was fiction.
I really loved this book as I read this housewife's struggles in life. I was able to relate to a lot of her struggles. This helped me to understand myself with many of my same problems.
